So I guess we are to believe the detective would be that stupid to confess to her involvement in the murders after being so careful throughout the movie in covering her tracks. And no way would Derrick be able to just walk away from killing the detective's ex-husband, at the very least he would have been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Val had been very open with Derrick, threatening him multiple times. She even made it clear to him that she wanted him to kill her ex-husband. She had no way of knowing that this one time he had been recording her.
