Is it worth watching

I was holding on till the series finished and bingeing it in a one month subscription. After reading reviews and seeing you tube reviews I'm asking shall I bother? As I've always liked the Picard character ( he got me into earl grey tea! ). Serious question.

reply

I like it. It's not a typical Star Trek series where each episode is pretty much self contained. It's building up a big ongoing story which means at times it can be slow.

reply

You mean like the Orville? Yeah I see what you mean now by the Star Trek of the old. Different stories for each episode as they go about exploring the universe. It's different now that Picard isn't commanding a ship of his own no more which I find reasonable unlike Discovery although they've sort of remedied it a bit via the Short Treks.

reply

tbh i would say no. at least when you like startrek of old.

they changed too much of the worldbuilding and the first 4 episodes are a slugfest. after it it gets some traction and turns into a semi-good scifi series. still not trek though.

Im working on a fancut right now, which I will release after the season is out. will wrap up the plot and throw out some useless drag. id obv recommend that ;D

If you want to see classic character get tortured. And want to see Picard get bitched out over and over again. Because he tried help people. Because everyone in the Star Trek Universe is now are a bunch of A-Holes. Then its great. About as great as pissing all over Gene Roddenberry Grave.

reply

Man, the time when Picard yelled at Rios I felt he was his old self again. No more old man croak voice which I usually hear when Stewart speaks.

reply

If you like lots of Deus Ex Machinas .... then it might be great.

reply

NO, because it's NOT the Star Trek I know and love.

reply

No. Not really in any sense. If you love Star Trek, you'll hate this, cause it's anti everything Star Trek was about. If you love the character of Picard, he's not really present here. This is just an old guy who looks like Picard keeping none of his traits intact. As a show unto itself, taken alone, it doesn't even follow its own logic or continuity. It's not even a particularly well produced science fiction show, using many drab 20/21st century props with little imagination. The editing is jarring and never in service to the story. Things just keep happening on screen, conflicts randomly resolve themselves, on to the next thing. The best thing this show serves up is getting to see some old familiar faces we love show up now and then. But they're so out of character it's precious little fan service. And of course, sooner or later, everybody gets MURDERED or TORTURED TO DEATH. It's compelling in one regard. You can't wait to see what bananas insulting crazy thing they'll do next.

An accurate assessment.

For a human.

reply

It's a bit crap.

Actually, no... Very crap.

reply

Thanks for the feedback people. Just saved me some money. P.S. Stay safe all.

It will show up on some other service you already have at some point. Frankly the only way I could get through it was by recording it and then watching it at a faster speed. When I tried to watch it at normal speed I would just get bored and fall asleep. Thus far they have maybe enough material to have created a movie... so basically it was a extremely long drawn out mess. It wouldn't surprise me if when the dust settles some Trek nerds somewhere take this mess and recut it into a watchable 90 minute movie... not that it would be great but certainly would be better than the painfully slow mess it is right now.

reply

im recutting it rn, but 90min is impossible. itll end more like 4hrs i guess

reply

I can understand that. To get it down to 90 minutes you would need to cut out quite a bit of the little side stories for all the characters. Lord knows they threw in enough of them.

reply

Sidestories are lost mostly, but collecting the crew takes 2hrs already.
