So if the visitors...

wouldn't have done anything wrong (escape, piss on the ashes, take pictures), what would have happened? No sacrifice, become member of the cult?

reply

I guess we'll never know for sure, but they were likely pre-selected for being utter douchebags from the start. Connie was going on dates with Ulf when Simon basically swooped in, and stole her from him, making them both potential targets to Ulf right away. Both of Christian's friends were complete obvious douchebags from the very first scene, and beyond. And, Christian himself was probably the biggest douche of them all. So, I think Pele, and Ulf's mission was to locate people "fit for sacrifice". All except for Dani of course, who was mostly pre-selected to be May Queen the moment she was invited. This is why the cult gave accolades to Pele for not only finding only 3 fit for sacrifice, and new blood (Christian), but best of all, a new member (Dani).

reply

Agreed. They were destined to be sacrificed in any csse.

reply

Yes , absolutely. Pele choose them all for sacrifice

reply

I don't think Christian was the biggest douche. It was Mark for sure (wins a prize for it). Actually, I think Christian is almost entirely painted as a dick because he wanted to split with Dani and felt he could not. It shows SOME (not a lot) quality he did not break up with her earlier, but her parents were just killed in a murder-homicide. It would be beyond brutal to break up with someone in that state. Of course, he probably should have much earlier. He just sort of goes along to get along, making him WEAK. I think he was made villainous by the writing and fans who feel Dani was heroic. They were all duped and either joined the cult, or were sacrificed by them. And they are not entirely unsympathetic = good to great writing.

After watching Midsommar maybe like 15-20 times now, with one of the continuing questions in the back of my mind being: is Christian a good guy?

I think I've finally decided, Christian is an awful person. We just hesitate, I think, because of the mitigating circumstances that you described. He doesn't seem "all bad". And sometimes, he seems like he was doing okay. I mean, like when Dani didn't want to do the drugs, he was gonna hang back. He didn't pressure Dani. He stood up to his friends.

But I think all of that just adds to the fact that he's not a comically obvious villain. Like most toxic folk, you can also point out reasons for their actions, or even point out the times when they're nice. But I think on the whole, he's a compulsive liar, he never takes responsibility for his actions, he blames other people for his shortcomings.

Mark is a idiot. But I think Christian is a fully calculated douchebag.

reply

Yeah, and not to mention when Christian robs Josh of the thesis topic, and when confronted about the missing book, Christian says he and Josh aren't really friends.

reply

WE DO NOT ASSOCIATE AS FRIENDS OF HIS OR AS COLLEAGUES AND WE'D BE SOOOO EMBARASSED. lol And Christian didn't say that because he was scared for his life. He was scared that he would lose his thesis topic lmao. No loyalty.

reply

Disagree somewhat acidraindrop. Mark is an idiotic douchbag. I mean, there are plenty of well-meaning, enjoyable idiots. He's both an idiot AND a total dick.

As for Christian, I think he was mostly weak and self-centered. Definitely at least a partial douchebag, but not an awful person. All of them were teeribly isolated, manipulated, and drugged by murdering cultists who had done this sort of thing MANY times.

Dani is a tragic (but not heroic) character, absolutely RIPE to be love-bombed and absorbed by the cult. Of course, most people would be super-weak in those circumstances. In the end, besides Mark, none of them are totally unsympathetic. Again, very solid movie and premise. I preferred Heriditary far more, which I'd call an "A" movie. Midsommar is more like a "B."

Fair fair. If anything, it's credit to the writing (in my opinion) if there's sufficient dissension on how to evaluate a key character as a person.

Dani is a tragic (but not heroic) character

I agree with that. And for the record, I'm sympathetic to all of them, including Christian even if I now think of him as an awful person. All these friends were completely manipulated and most of them murdered by this wild cult.

I think Hereditary is an objectively better movie, but I prefer Midsommar. They are both up there among my favorite films as a whole.

But they weren't, though. They weren't even there for the full nine days, so a few days on vacation doesn't make them "isolated." They really weren't manipulated by anyone, either... And certainly no one was "drugged" by any means. Drugs were provided, and they all happily imbibed, but no one was ever slipped anything or led to believe they were taking something they weren't. (The only exception is Christian's "love-spell" thing, but pubes and period blood aren't drugs.)

reply

Super long time to reply. Yes, Christian was absolutely drugged first so he'd be receptive to have sex with the "anointed" young woman and then paralyzed when sewed into bear skin and immolated.

reply

I just think he is an average person.

reply

They only wanted a may queen and the others to die.
Take Christian as an example!
I think, of all the visitors he was maybe the most open minded one regarding the strange cult.
He didn't do anything to piss the swedish people off!

However they highly drugged him and let him die in a bears body.

man i gotta rewatch this film it was pretty sweet from parts i recall. i saw the beginning of it while extremely baked couch surfin at my buddies pad in shitfransico but passed out from the fire gas before finishing the film. or maybe i did finish it was just too stoned to have it wiped from memory since i kinda remembered the last scene. or maybe i woke up for that? idk i was pretty dang baked thats for sure

reply

It was probably a good thing you were baked. This movie creeped me out more than Hereditary and yet I cannot wait for the next creepy film from this director. Give it another go. Enjoy!!

I think Christian was specifically selected to mate with Maja because the elder priestess told him that Maja had chosen him before he had arrived. It made it seem mystical at first but probably Pelle had sent a photograph.
