Yes, it's a slow burn.... but I'm okay with that.
But man... this was a great mind-phuck movie and I absolutely love the atmosphere created in the commune.
If you liked The Witch and Hereditary... go see this movie.
Fuck Annabelle Comes Home... Say Yes to Midsommar!
I was incredibly surprised by this movie, and when it finished I had no idea what the hell to think. When I took time to process it, though, I thought it was amazing! It was so different.
I HATED that people were taking the whole thing as a joke. Yes, the sex scene was "weird" but I found it more disturbing and jaw-dropping than stupid or cheesy. I mean, when you look at how depraved and twisted those people are, THAT is what is scary and horrifying.
AND the main actresses' performance was OUTSTANDING. I found myself tearing up everytime she felt those intense emotions. I empathized with her so much. I loved it. She may have been the best part of the movie. Especially the end with her crying that she saw her boyfriend burning alive, then turning to a dark smile. Just, wow.
I'm so glad you liked it. My mom's boyfriend said it was the worst movie he has ever seen. And that, combined with all the people laughing during the movie, PISSED ME OFF. But then again, I know that, 1, everyone has their own opinion, and, 2, there is so much to that movie that people probably don't understand, and, 3, many people are too immature to appreciate this movie. NOT saying that if you didn't like it that you're immature, but that if you just look on the surface and do not even bother to try to understand it, THEN that may be a sign of immaturity.
I don't usually go to the movies to numb out. I go to the movies to feel the emotions, to learn about human themes, and try to appreciate an artist's creation. I don't always like it. But I see Ari Aster's horrific and beautiful creation here. Again, just my opinion.
Many people these days are quite superficial, so it isn't very surprising that many missed the deeper meaning to what was going on. Some of it was very subtle and I had to watch it two more times to really understand all of it. After the third time, I was aware that this is my number one movie so far this year.

I am on the fence about watching this film and its fans aren't helping it any more than its detractors are hurting it.
I mean, everyone has their own opinion. If you take the time to try to understand it, and you still don't like it, then that is totally okay obviously. I just meant that if people don't try to at least look past the surface level of the movie, they don't have a chance of truly liking it. But hey, I give credit to anybody who sees it and makes an effort to understand it, even if you don't like it!
shareIt's this attitude of "If you didn't like it then you didn't understand it ... even if you THINK you understood it, you didn't. Otherwise you would be like me and recognize greatness." That is what I am getting from about 30% of the people who like it. Same exact attitude from BvS fans: a damning comparison.
On the other side of the fence I get "It was too long and thus bad" which tells me more about the viewer than the movie.
Cheesy sounds bad. Tonally uneven also sounds bad. Mind-fuck sounds good. Creepy atmosphere sounds good.
People need to accept that everyone has different opinions! Just because they see it as greatness does not mean you have to, or that you're wrong or stupid for not seeing it as so.
I suppose you have to go into it with as unbiased and objective a view as possible. Not that that is so easy given all the reviews you have read. But I loved the movie! And maybe you do, maybe you don't. Just don't jump to conclusions SO FAST like everyone else does. They see weird stuff, and instantly they think, "Oh, it's cheesy and weird. I automatically hate this movie." I think opinions ought to be formed with a little deeper consideration than most give.
Movies that I know I will see no matter what get the "zero exposure" treatment. Others that I am uncertain about can sometimes sink into "analysis paralysis." This is especially true for me and horror films. I love a good one but hate 4 out of 5 that I watch. I have to approach them with high skepticism and scrutiny.
I agree about applying some consideration beyond the surface. Stage-one thinking is a cancer of the modern zeitgeist.
It was intentionally funny at times. I'm not sure why you were upset people were laughing.
shareI understood the movie, and I laughed, for the simple fact that it wasn't done well. If it was, then even people who didn't get it would still be too disturbed by it to laugh. Who laughed at Requiem For A Dream? Even the most immature among us, if they paid attention to the movie, wouldn't laugh at the end when the creepy old man requests "ass to ass".

Yes, it reminded me a lot of the Witch, especially Dani's indoctrination at the end.
shareI still haven't got around to The Witch, but I loved Hereditary. I honestly enjoyed Midsommar more than Heredity.
I enjoyed more of the lore of Midsommar and it was interesting seeing the disturbing celebration of this other culture. Surprisingly it always being light out added more to the creepy asthetic for me because it can't be used as a visual aid for a passage of time like when most movies transition from light to dark.
I don't necessarily know if I could consider it a horror film like Hereditary though. To me it felt more like a suspense movie.
That being said I can't wait to see what else Ari Aster has to offer as well as Florence Pugh.
