100.00% Predictable From ... Well, Trailer (*** SPOILERS, Obviously)
I like to say that trailers normally give away three-quarters of every movie, so when I’ve seen enough to decide I to see the film, I hit STOP — usually halfway.
I also like to say that today’s genre directors should make much better movies than the ones I saw as a kid, because they can see everything I saw and all the rest since to learn from.
As trailers go, Run’s had me wondering: is that all? Really?
As directors go, the movie had me wondering if this one had ever seen many thrillers.
The trailer shows what is obviously a standard Munchausen’s-By-Proxy setup. Are we not supposed to see that? It was so obvious it had me wondering if that’s what they wanted me to think, but actually had a real (second) twist planned. No such luck: I saw it all coming. The switched Rx, mom hiding the WaU acceptance letter, the postman getting stabbed by syringe when mom was unable to convince him ... right down to the end. Even with individual “scares”, I collected on every bet — starting with Chloe thinking she hears mom drive up, looks out and sees postman just leaving, wheels frantically to the door to get a peek at the mail before — NOPE! There’s mom at the door — big surprise. Right out of B Movie Tricks & Tips 1953-Present.
There’s a last-minute attempt at a The Nightmare Never Ends twist at the end, a 2020 version of “Another one’s been born in Seattle,” but it doesn’t really add up to much. The primary mystery of this thriller for me remains why it was even made.
