Based on a true story, which is even crazier!

The case of Dee Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy Rose. Gypsy murdered her mom with the help of a man she met online.

From Wiki -
Gypsy Rose, according to her mom, suffered from leukemia, asthma, muscular dystrophy, along with several other chronic conditions and had the "mental capacity of a 7-year-old due to brain damage" she had suffered as a result of her premature birth.

Investigations into the murder found no evidence of the claimed disorders. One physician suspected that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder which causes a parent or other caretaker to exaggerate, fabricate, or induce illness in a person under their care in order to obtain sympathy or attention.

Dee Dee had slightly changed her name after her family, who suspected she had poisoned her stepmother, confronted her about how she treated Gypsy Rose. Nonetheless, many people accepted her situation as true, and the two benefited from the efforts of various charities.

So this is based on that case? Because Gypsy was really her mom's baby. Just asking if this is stated by the people who created "Run" or a surmising on your part.

reply

Nothing from the makers. What I meant was the real life version of this story is even crazier. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the makers took inspiration from the case, there's way too many similarities for it to be a coincidence.

Not trolling, I just don't see all that much the same in these stories....I watched the mini series about Gypsy and the documentary. Gypsy actually knows she is not sick throughout most of her life....Dee Dee bilks the world for $$$. This kook in "Run" is just into having a kid....very strange mom, kid is totally unaware !!!! And I think she kills the mail guy, even though she says he is fine. Wondering if it is based off a different case?

reply

This movie isn't related to that case. There are almost no similarities.

There was a mini series on that case, in case you missed it...it was very, very good, way compelling. Its maybe two years old by now if you want to look it up...definitely worth a look.

That can't possibly be the only case in existence of Munchausen by proxy. Any one of them could have served as inspiration.

This plot line was used in the first season of The Politician , too.

reply

There are lots of those sick with that out there, dating back to the 1800's.....obviously before too but I mean before they knew what it was.
Even in the early 90's when my mom was diagnosed it was rarely heard of.

reply

This movie is in no way related to that case.

way

reply

No. there have been several cases of munchhausen.

Though Run isn't based on any one true story, it's definitely a thriller that reflects the horrors of abuse against disabled people and the real life experiences of victims of carer abuse, as well as FDIA. Aside from the more horrific realities that the movie represents, there's a different more hopeful kind of truth to Run as well.
