Disappointed overall.

I had heard great things about this movie, and it was well made. But there wasn't enough meat on the bones, despite interesting and moving parts.

The comparisons some have made with Saving Private Ryan are obvious, although- and I'm English- Spielberg's movie was incredible in parts and had gritty war action.

I accept that they were runners in another War and not in the role of frontline British troops going ''over the top'', but I was always expecting something else, then it ended?

An opportunity missed to have portrayed real life stories of frontline British WW1 troops fighting the Jerries.

Yeah - definately not enough meat on the bones, with all that great effort made to recreate WWI, I would of loved to of seen an actual battle in this film, to see the plight of the poor young soldiers (More than two) and view the harsh experience they lived in day by day and comradeship they built up.

Calling it 1917, I kind of expected that, maybe the title was a bit misleading.

reply

Yes, exactly that, more of an army in action and comradeship for a section of the film, instead of a handful.

WW1 and it's battle/trench horrors is an incredible story to tell in a modern setting.

reply

Yep especially with WW1 films of this production quality few and far between. But maybe the success of this and Dunkirk may lead to more war movies being made, or TV series, I'd love to see a WW1 TV series akin to Band of Brothers.

reply

There was an 80's WW1 TV series called Anzacs, starring Paul Hogan (in a serious role), which was great (at the time I thought that)

reply

I remember that well, something like Anzacs with today’s production values and special effects.

The problem, all they did was live in the trench till they rotated to the rear then to the trench. They didn't attack the other side offen. Somehow, the officers came to the conclusion all they did was murder their men for nothing. Better off to watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrabKK9Bhds
