Brazil vs. Costa Rica - 18-06-22

Nil-nil at half time.

And 2 - 0 at full time to Brazil despite their being in full control of the game from the 15 minute mark onwards - they must be devastated after all that effort and accumulating all those yellow cards for just a two goal win.

Still, a win is a win and that's all they needed from Jesus onto Coutinho for that goal in the 91st minute with Neymar finally getting in on the 97th minute!

reply

And blamo!

reply

Phew, it was tense all the way into extra time and then Brazil finally did what they were trying to do for well over an hour of the game.

Costa Rica did a great effort holding them off but 3 yellow cards each will maybe make Brazil have to go softly for a while.

Exciting stuff Bucky, next up we have Nigeria and Iceland but the game after that could settle who goes through from Group E with Serbia looking to top the table after their game with Switzerland..

reply

Can you explain a few of the finer details Juror? Is it lose 2 and you don't get to the knock out round? The knock out round is the top 16 correct? Sorry I like the tourny, just not familiar with the way the bracket works.

reply

OK Bucky, each group plays the three other teams once. If they beat any particular team they get 3 points, if they draw they each get 1 - lose and you get nothing.

The idea is that the two teams with the most points go through to the next round and the other two are out and can go home.

It can get tricky when there's a joint second place because then goals scored, and other factors if that is also equal, would separate who goes through from who doesn't.

The best any team can get in this stage is 9 points - win all three games. The worst is 0 points - lose all three games.

I hope this helps!

reply

And after the first round of knockouts how many teams are left?

You are a big help thank you!

reply

Out of 211 countries eligible to enter only 32 win that honour.

It then goes 32>16>8>4>2 with the winner coming from that game Bucky.

5 Stages in total with the final being on the 15th of July.

You are welcome!

reply

That is awesome! So when does the round of 32 start? And once the round of 32 starts its all single elimination knock out right?

reply

There are 8 groups, A-H, each with 4 teams in them - that's where we are just now, the 32 eligible.

Only half can go through which takes us down to 16 which retain their A-H group category but won't play each other in that round.

Then they whittle down quickly to 8 (The quarter finals)

Down to 4 (The semi finals) - from which third place is allocated.

Down to 2 and one will be the winner and the other second place.

Here's a wall chart to show you how it works: https://s.bundesliga.com/assets/img/1180000/1171866_imgw968.jpeg

reply

Thank you sir. I enjoy the games, was just a little unsure on how the bracket worked. Now how does one make the top 32? That is with international tournaments and qualifiers through out the 4 years correct?

reply

The qualifiers are played out with even more groups spread across geographical regions and so you'll be more likely to play a nearby country rather than one at the other side of the world. These qualifiers are quite casual and spread over two years to whittle down to the final 32.

For most countries getting into the final 32 is enough to be proud, but once you are so close...you get the hunger for it and I think that's what we are seeing more this year than before because the giants (As it where) Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Uruguay aren't playing up to their top form and others like Italy and The Netherlands aren't even in this World Cup while Iceland and others are doing wonderfully.

Give it a go and I'm sure others around here will help you out if I'm not about with any questions you have.

Off to catch Nigeria and Iceland just now - hope you enjoy it Bucky!

I do not know if you are trying to be funny or offensive. There is no country named Puerto Rica. The team that played Brazil and that played in the Quarter Finals last world cup is named Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a Central America country affiliated to the CONCACAF (the same federation where Mexico and USA play).

reply

Yeah I'll correct that Ranmast, wasn't trying to be funny or offensive, I'm always looks at the gender of words which makes me screw over everything which comes before (Particularly when excited, as I was watching this!).

Fixing it right now!

reply

Oh! OK, it was just an upright mistake. Then sorry if I was somewhat harsh, but it hard to say in these boards when people are being obnoxious or just sincere.

reply

I actually speak Spanish/Castellano and have visited lots of Latin America and have friends all over it. But being a native English speaker I focus on the gender of a word and use the proper grammar for it (As best I can). In this case the Rico/Rica thing was where my focus was and so it was just me being stupid and replacing Coast and Port without looking at their ends cause I was looking at the Rich ending instead - silly mistake but all down to me being excited and not having my mind on typing properly.

You've done me a good service Ranmast, thank you!

reply

I understand your mistake. There is actually a country/unincorporated territory to USA called Puerto Rico, so it may be some confusion there. The problem is that the second word in spanish (in this case an adjective. Adjectives in spanish can go before of after the noun) ought to have the same gender as the first. By saying Puerto (which is male gender) the next word must be also be male gender. In your case (and the country) it must be Puerto Rico (both male). When using Costa (which is female gender) the next word have to be female gender. In the case of the team playing Brazil, it must be Costa Rica (both female). Yes, rica/rico means rich in English. So, I see you have your Spanish knowledge in the right place, just a bit of confusion this time. Cheers...

P.S. Actually, Costa Rica is the country where the Jurassic World Park is located in the movie. Today is the U.S. release of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom.
