Vivarium definition: an enclosure, container, or structure adapted or prepared for keeping animals under seminatural conditions for observation or study or as pets; an aquarium or terrarium.

So the couple was being observed at being human, to aid the “aliens?” In being more human. As were the other couples in the other layers of the world

Also so much of the film had to do with the introduction scene where the baby bird throws the other egg and new hatchling out of the nest and you realize as the hatchling that has taken over the nest is another species. The mother continues to raise it and feed it even when it's clear that the hatchling is a much larger bird than the mother is.

Very important to the film this bit. This is the nature of the Cowbird. A female cowbird quietly searches for female birds of other species that are actively laying eggs. Once she has found a suitable host, the cowbird will sneak onto the resident bird's nest when it is away, usually damage or remove one (or more) egg, and replace that egg with one (or more) of her own.

The two main characters are mimic this.
