I enjoyed it

well enough. It's not great but it's pretty good overall. There are a few genuinely groan worthy cliched lines and I'm not convinced Jessica Chastain is a beat-em-up action star but she's very watchable as is the rest of the cast. Plus they managed to give Penelope Cruz a flirtatiously silly moment and that's always good for a smile. I've seen a lot worse in the twisty-turny espionage genre and it's certainly better than it's rating.
In fact looking at the breakdown of the scoring there is a solid 21% of the vote giving it a 1 and I'm going to guess that's mostly doctrine driven haters who've never seen the film.

Would you rate it higher than Atomic Blonde?

reply

No, a point or two below Atomic Blonde. I thought Charlize Theron had a real edge in the film. This one is enjoyable but has a much softer centre (if the makes any sense) and very little tension.

I think I understand what you mean, its not "solid" enough throughout? I think spy films do well if it has believable tension, so thats not good to read about 355. I kinda figured it was gonna be more "superhero schlock" than "spy noir" after seeing the trailer for the movie numerous times.

Atomic Blonde was pretty good and I thought Charlize Theron did well in it, with a good supporting cast and setting. Thats why I asked, to get a baseline of comparison, help me consider If I'll ever watch this film.

I'll probably give the film a chance if Im in the mood and my local library gets it in stock.

Have you ever seen Burn Notice? I love that show...but theres a point in the show where it loses all tension and you just KNOW that these super spies will always come out on top and it got close to killing it for me. But then in the last season, someone new took over or perhaps the writers themselves got good criticism to help them correct course, they actually pulled off bringing back that needed tension and there were several scenes and episodes where it really makes you think a main character will die!

I saw a few episodes of Burn Notice. It didn't really hold my attention and to be honest the only reason I watched more than one episode was Gabrielle Anwar.

She was gorgeous on that show. I also liked seeing Bruce Campbell : )
