In the scene where the creature first appear in town, why did Lee immediately turn and run after it slammed into the car?

Based on his angle, he didn’t know what hit the car. Realistically, he would have stopped to see what happened, saw the creature, and then ran.

Did I miss something or was it just a goof in the film?

I don't think it's a goof. You're not going to inspect and overthink in that situation, all you know is something huge hit the car and so you NEED TO MOVE
