Very Fun and Clever Movie (spoilers)

I love the beginning action sequence. "Subverting expectations" has been a buzz phrase ever since the Last Jedi controversy. Well this movie did a good job of starting strong that way by setting up a would-be Final Girl in Emma Roberts and even hinting at a romantic subplot with that handsome guy and then killing them both off early. And afterwards Ike Barinholtz's character is implied to be an important character and he is ALSO killed off

Political discourse is, honestly, almost tangential to the plot. It is obvious that this movie was written by liberals to make fun of other liberals. Most of the victims are killed off before they get any chance to even express what ideas they hold that make them "deplorables". And the actual final girl, it turns out, may not even be a "deplorable" at all, since it turns out to be a case of mistaken identity

I partly feel that that was a cop out. A part of me felt that the movie would have had more bite if she had turned out to be the most outright bigoted victim in the group, but the movie took enough chances and avoided enough cliches so that I was still ok with the ending

The script contains humor and wit. Betty Gilpin's performance is a bit eccentric, but it lends mystery to her character. All the stars seem to bring their A game. This is well above average by Blumhouse standards

It has a mediocre 57% on RT, but that's kind of to be expected. The movie has a premise which is sure to polarize. It humanizes "deplorables" and makes fun of the ridiculousness of upper-class liberalism. A bit like Get Out, where it's a liberal making fun of other liberals, except it wasn't made by a black "auteur" (I like Jordan Peele btw) so it has no reason to be fawned over

Overall, it was a very cool experience. The best "horror" comedy I've seen since Ready or Not. Would recommend
