i just finished watching this for the second time in five days or so.

i'm no expert on animation, stop motion or otherwise, but i think this is one of the most astonishing looking films i've ever seen in my life.

i didn't quite follow the story the first time around, but after doing a little reading on 'the colony' in chile, i feel like i grokked things a little better this go around.

it's streaming on shudder, so if you have that service, i really suggest giving it a look. it's only 70 minutes long, and i think you'll find something quite unlike almost anything else you've ever seen.

it's also on shudder & criterion, but if you don't subscribe to either of those, you can now watch it on tubi for the price of sitting through a few ads.

genius film imo. i might watch it again today for the 4th time.

The imagery sure is unparallelled. The story is harder to grasp.

That was fascinating. I was expecting a stop motion film that happened to be horror. I didn't expect this strangely surreal presentation that seemed to shift from the physical reality beyond the fourth wall to the fictional story that was being painted/drawn/assembled piece by piece before the viewer.

I wish I'd known more about the background before watching, because...watching it, it just comes off as a strangely simple fairy tale story...in a very stylized way. But talking it through afterwards, while googling the actual cult, I realized the significance of the frame narrative, and thus, the significance of the film itself.

Which elevates the horror aspect as well. Thanks for bumping this; I wouldn't have known about this movie otherwise lol

glad to hear you liked it. i absolutely love this film, and really hope people discover it. it's widely available now on shudder, criterion and tubitv, so it's out there for everyone. it's really a unique creation, clearly a labor of love.

as i said above, i was definitely pretty clueless the first time i watched it as to what any of that had to do with 'the colony,' & maybe that's the best way to experience it the first go-around. confusion might be the proper state of mind while taking it all in.

Yeah, I grabbed it on Tubi! Hopefully more people get to check this out.

Did you see the behind the scenes shots too? It's fascinating how the duo filmed this at various art galleries over the course of five years. So cool!

That's a good point. The strange climax, and then the closing narration really got me and my friend, thinking, uh what the hell. And that got us digging about the colony, and the implications of the film.

Yeah, I came across this after watching some Jan Svankmajer puppetry movies. You might want to check out Alice, his mid-80’s films.

Blood Tea Red String is also very good and has a similar “horror” or adult fairy tale feel to it.

Wolf House seems to operate on dream-logic and is quite surreal, I’m glad it’s on Tubi.

in fact, i watched alice this past week for the very first time, after i noticed it was dropping off the criterion channel.

i really enjoyed the first 20 minutes or so, and you have to respect the amount of work that went into it, but i have to admit overall i didn't really care for it. found it a bit flat and repetitive after that opening.

never heard of blood red tea string, but i see it's streaming on tubi, and it definitely looks intriguing. i'll check it out today or tomorrow, & will drop my thoughts here when i do. thanks for the heads-up.
