Quantum time machine VCR to the past?

I love those first few seasons, or episodes, or even moments when you are watching a story on TV or listening on the radio and it is full of possibilities, but sooner or later they lapse into the boring, familiar, absurd, stupid, impossible, pandering, etc....

That happened when we get the first glimpse of what the big deal "machine" is in "Devs". And what is the point? So the CEO can look back at pictures of his departed little daughter?

To be fair I am only on episode 3, but it's starting to look cliche and silly. Of course it is, it's a TV show. True ... true.

reply

No, The BIG DEAL about the "machine" is it can look into the future, that is THE reveal.

reply

Both ideas are ridiculous.

So you didn't love it? How do you love the first few episodes, but think these ideas are ridiculous? I think what they're talking about is a simulated universe. I immediately thought of that when Sergei said, "this changes everything," but the creepy co-worker said, "it changes nothing." Which is what I always say when thinking about a simulated universe. Even if you found out, you still need to wake up, support your family in this "virtual" world, make money, etc. They are using quantum TIVO sort to speak. LOL! If you can rewind, that must mean we're a simulation/software that's already been completed? So you can rewind, fast forward too. He kept talking about the universe being deterministic, no true free will. That would be consistent with a completed simulation. It's not ridiculous, it's fascinating to me. To pull footage of Jesus on the cross is very eerie.

That describes about 99.99% of all science fiction. It doesn't mean I have to hate it or love it, but in this case nothing of the "scientific premise" really made sense. It was like a time travel story. I personally just cannot stand most time travel stories, but it doesn't mean I have to hate Terminator, which I enjoyed immensely. I just didn't in this case.

reply

No, that is not what it mean, but I won't spoiler you.

reply

Ridiculous? What are you talking? We can use physics predict future and reconstruction past on planet level.

Devs use the same principle but to atom level.

reply

Quantum theory says atoms are not predictable ... that is the whole point.

reply

Right now? yes, we can't predict atom. Future? Who knows?

reply

That is the whole point ... you cannot view the goings on at the quantum level - it is a property of the universe dummy.

Dude, you're splitting hairs. The Matrix, Gattaca, Contact are three best sci-fi movies ever made, but they all have fundamental science problems.

Even Interstellar market as most science accuracy sci-fi movie, has science problem.

I'm not saying Devs is great show, I love Ex Machina, hate Devs, but if "predict atom" is too much for you, I don't think there are any sci-fi movie and show for you.

reply

If you think Interstellar was in any way scientifically accurate I don't know what to say, it was pure fantasy.

reply

I said they "market".

reply

Market = lie = irrelevant.
