They tried really hard - but failed
The whole movie leaves the impression that they tried very hard to create an iconic movie .. but you already know after that weak intro (weird repetitive cuts way too zoomed in, no atmosphere, overall cheap feel) that the movie is gonna suck.
- Everything happens in 3-4 boring rooms. They could have created a whole theme park with different sets and tones.
- That whole "not saying a single word" just feels forced .. and cage isnt really the guy that can pull this off.
- No explanations for the weird behavior of not speaking - drinking these cans, getting more and more psyched up and the meaning of the breaks. Why would you create such a main character? One-dimensional, boring, unlikeable .. he didnt even have facial expressions. Compare it with Ash from Army of darkness for example - thats a guy I like to watch.
- For the most important part: The monsters are just bland. Not much difference between them . They all just come straight in and start dishing out weak punches, bites, scratches and then they all just die by being punched by cage - most of the time with bare hands. Have you seen one fight you have pretty much seen all.
There was so much more potential - unique theme songs and sets for every monster - unique abilities, unique back stories and unique deaths. All we got was a big monkey jumping out of a bathroom stall and then being beaten to a pulp, big wow.
- Not very gory and way too tame for a horror film. Weird looking blood - generic kills, bad cuts. I didnt really expect a nude scene after the terrible first half but then they didnt even show the upperbody of the girl during the sex scene (despite her wearing a bra). Great job.
- Acting is weak and amateurish. The kids, especially the main hot chick, were terrible and generic. One exception, mostly visually, might be the chick in the red high socks.
I have nothing against trashy movies - I love Samurai Cop or The Room - But they all have something that makes them special gems. Willys Wonderland just stays bland ..
And people calling it "instant cult classic" must be trolling.
