When did "expanded universe" stuff take over?

I read the comics. I'm way behind, but I read them. I like many of them. But they're still just comics and there's stuff that clearly didn't happen in the "movie universe".

But something happened in recent years. You can't have a Star Wars conversation without some punk kid bringing up some book, comic, or animated show. You could ask a question specifically about something in one of the movies, and they will break out some - often irrelevant - comic about a comic or cartoon character. It's all over Star Wars social media.

Filoni did it with this show. He's obsessed with shoving his little universe into this show. Now I like this show, I like it quite a bit, but the constant shoving of characters from his cartoon into it is a little annoying. Bo Katan, Asohka, the Dark Saber - none of that had anything to do with finding Baby Yoda a home; but it was crammed in there as a part of the endgame.

When did it become about the "expanded universe"?

reply

Lucasfilm and Disney are creating their version of the Arrowverse/Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's only natural to insert various characters to expand on them later on.

That's not what I'm saying.

I'm quite happy with the direction it's going and compared to the all the Disney movies its way ahead with how well the lore is being handled.

The Expanded Universe has existed since the first Star Wars movie came out, at the very least after ROTJ when people wanted a continuation of the story and the lore. Lucas wouldn't do it with any more movies, so authors made up their own stuff in books and comics, etc. It's really not a new thing, and Disney may try their hardest to de-canonise it, but fans will always hold these EU stories close to their heart.

Personally, I never read any of it, as it wasn't the movies.

1. As far as the old EU vs the new EU, I'm pretty sure that "war" is over. Disney owns the property and can do what it wants with it. And the "we love th EU" crowd has no voice anymore.Disney won, they have their own EU now.

2. Aside from a few books, I didn't either, and I think most people used to be that way too. But now? Mention a movie - or even The Mandalorian (live action trumps everything imo) - and some know-it-all launches into a rant about Ahsoka or some cartoon other cartoon character. It's mostly a young people thing in my experience, but can dominate the conversations.

Disney won NOTHING, and people will always have their "head canon" if they enjoyed the EU books that came out prior to Disney's "acquisition". And I doubt Disney would go so far as to organise mass book burnings of EU material. Woe betide them if they did.

reply

Good for you and your head canon, but those stories are dead. You can read em over and over and love them until you're blue in the face, but they stopped making them and have made their own EU now. Yes, Disney won that battle. Hell, "Legends" conversations have died down tremendously too.

Why do you keep side tracking the conversation? This isn't what I asked.
