It's true. He is NOT Yoda. Yoda died during ROTJ. This little guy just happens to be the same species as Yoda. Everyone's only calling him "Baby Yoda" because we don't know his name or the name of his species.

It's not really about him. Assuming it is a him. The baby (so far) is just a very cute plot device to motivate Mando's break with the Guild and subsequent going on the run. At some point he's going to have to track down the people who put up that bounty, then we'll find out more about what they want, and where the baby was taken from. Unless they were killed in the process I assume there are parents out there somewhere who want him back.

There's a crazy theory that's waaaay out there that this is a clone of Yoda, so it would technically be Baby Yoda. But the big question would be, how in the world did our favorite Dagobah Sage get himself cloned?

One interesting detail is that the doctor you see in The Mandalorian show (forget which episode, but he was begging Mando and actually trying to protect Baby Yoda) had an insignia on his shoulder. That symbol is the EXACT same one the cloned subjects had in the cloning facility on Kamino (Attack of the Clones). This doctor was very likely doing something related to cloning...unless he found those clothes for a bargain at a store.

That doctor guy was wearing the uniform of an Imperial scientist. From what I understand it's military bigwigs from the old Empire who set up little fiefdoms, bide their time and gather strength, and eventually found the First Order. Clearly they're interested in Baby Yoda - who can't be their own clone, since they had to go and get him from someone else. Maybe they want to harness the natural Force ability of his species. Imagine an army of stormtroopers all with the skills of Jedi. If they could isolate the right genes ...

Although possibly a secret love child between Yoda and Yaddle, the only two of the Yodarian Species in all of Star Wars movie works, he is not The Yoda but then again with Disney you never know.

"The Child" is 50 years old. That puts its birth more than 20 before the events of The Phantom Menace. It could be offspring of Yoda and a female of a species. Or it could be a clone of Yoda, with his DNA having been secured while he was on Coruscant or any other planet doing Jedi business. Or its just an unrelated member of that species.
