Oh you racists...

A Black women gets cast as a little mermaid and you declare your culture is being stolen and new stories should be made for Black characters.

Then new stories for Black characters are created and you complain about it.

reply

I think what people are complaining about is....how much the film downplays what really happened with that tribe.
It makes them look like a bunch of heroic women who kicked the ass of the evil, colonizing men. The way this movie mis-portrays what really happens is not only a perfect example of "wokeness", it's also rewriting history in order to make one group look bad and another group look good.

If people did their own research on this tribe, they (should) be outraged that they are being glorified.

reply

Because comic movie are all about historical accuracy

reply

Comic movie??? WTF???

Well, when you elect to portray historical figures and then you change that history it's a problem.

Imagine the warcry if someone would make a movie glorifying Hitler as being the good guy and fighting the brits that want to kill the Jews. Would you be ok with that kind of movie???

And it's funny that you care or don't care about historical accuracy in a very hypocritical way.

reply

ALWAYS COMES BACK TO HITLER...YOU GUYS,I SWEAR...HITLER IS A MAJOR FIGURE IN HISTORY AND POP CULTURE...FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS...THERE IS NO VALID COMPARISON TO THE MAN...A BETTER COMPARISON WOULD BE ANY NUMBER OF MAFIA OR GANG FILMS THAT PLAY REAL LIFE "VILLAINS" AS SYMPATHETIC CHARACTERS AND HEROES.

reply

And there’s been a fair amount of public criticism about Hollywood’s glorification of the mafia and no one’s calling those critics racists or bigots to my memory. The criticism here also reminds me of what Mel Gibson got for the Patriot which was reasonable and yet still didn’t prevent me from seeing the movie and enjoying the story. I will proceed the same with the mentality in watching the Woman King.

reply

YEAH...BECAUSE THE IRISHMAN HAD A LOT OF PUSHBACK...FUCK OFF...YOU WEINER SKINS HAVE NO ARGUMENT EXCEPT INTOLERANCE.

reply

Well, people hated the Irishman because it was a terrible movie. But, there’s been plenty of criticism mafia movies and their inaccurate depictions of Italians. Here’s an example from a very cursory Google search:

NO YOU FUCK OFF...I SAID IT FIRST...AND LOUDEST...THAT IS WHAT COUNTS...WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BREAKFAST FOOD?

Cinnamon toast. And when you mock me now, at least it will be well deserved

🙂YUM

Irishman a terrible film? Last time I checked it got great acclaim from the mass majority of critics and audiences

Reading more about the movie, it sounds like it does address the Dahomey's role in the slave trade, how they derived wealth from it. It plays with some time lines a few decades about when they abolished it.

The story isn't mainly about that, though. It is about the female warriors who fought against colonizers. Apparently, that happened.

reply

Even so, they couldn't help but rewrite that portion of them being remorseful of their ways and transitioning to selling palm oil (I think) instead.

reply

I mean, it did.

When the Dahomey raided neighboring peoples who were under French rule for slaves, after slavery had been outlawed by the British crown... and were promptly massacred for it, with barely any losses on the French side.

I'm sure that's all right there in the movie, though.

reply

Well put.

There's quite a few black people out there that are starting to speak out against this movie too because it downplays the role Dahomey had in the slave trade.

Personally, I don't like it when films totally change historical events but I can live with it because I'm used to. Movies don't have to portray history exactly the way it happened but I do prefer that they keep it as close as possible.

reply

It's one thing to create a new story, it's another to create a story based on historical events and then bastardize it by altering the way it really happened so people think something happened when it really didn't.

reply

Just about every historical drama does that, though.

reply

Irritating as hell. Next thing will be. Einstein portrayed by an Asian but also he’s a cage fighter on the side

reply

They don’t usually flip it a full 180 degrees, though.

reply

Sure they do. All the time.

reply

Try saying that again if a white, blond, blue-eyed guy is cast as the next Black Panther or a white, blond, blue-eyed actress cast as Princess Tiana. Nobody will be able to hear you over the deafening screams of hypocritical, racist blacks and white liberals when they reveal just how bigoted they are versus the people they hate.

reply

🤣

reply

You say that as of a white actor has never been cast as a person of color before.

reply

You forget that it hasn't been done in a long time, and if someone attempted it today, there would be rioting in Hollyweird.

reply

BUT IT WAS DONE...FOR YEARS AND YEARS...IN BAD FAITH...AS WELL NOT HAVING ROLES FOR OR ONLY HIRING FOR LIMITED AND OFTEN DEMEANING ROLES...PERPETRATED AGAINST EVERY RACE EXCEPT THE WHITE ONE BY THE WHITE ONE...WHICH IS WHY WE ARE NOW MAKING ROOM FOR EVERYBODY IN FILM AND TELEVISION...REGARDLESS OF ANYTHING.

No one had problems about Black Panther or Nope movies and other. They were made with black leads using characters that were not stolen from Whites.

Problem with this one is that its purposely racist and deliberately lies about historic events to use it for their racism. Not to mention that it glorifies slave traders and makes them heroic people who they were not. Again - Hollywood and Viola Davis glorifies tribe that were catching black people, tortured them, killed and sold to slavery for personal gain. Why would any self respected black people support it is beyond me. Hollywood thinks that they are too stupid to understand reality.

Whats hilarious is that script was written by two White women. And director looks like she is mixed race.

And from 6 producers - only two are black including Viola Davis who sold herself to wokeness long time ago. 4 other are White.

This movie was made by White woke people to pat themselves on the back that they are white saviors and do something good for "poor oppressed black folks". Thats why they shifted historical events to make Whites bad. Thats why people hate this woke racist garbage.

reply

Nobody had a problem with Black Panther? Oh, the gaslighting!

reply

this aged poorly

reply

This movie is inaccurate historically. Dahomey was enslaving Africans before the intercontinental slave trade began and they continued to do so even after Britain outlawed it in 1840. The Agojie were not heroes by any measure. They killed slaves as part of their training. There are accounts of them executing hundreds of men women and children during royal funerals and religious rites. They never willingly gave up the slave trade. They were forced to do so by the French

reply

So, the movie does not mention slave trading by the Dahomey?

reply

nope, its quite the opposite. they are portrayed as the heroes. they were trying to make a female black empowerment movie but didnt realize there is this thing called the internet.
