Yes it is, and to be proud of it as well, after all what's good for the goose....
I literally know nothing about this movie, but it should be said that "Hollywood" is known to change facts to make a more entertaining story. Take anything with the words "Based on a true story" with a grain of salt. Maybe this is the exception, but I highly doubt it. Hopefully it's a cool and fun movie but by no means should you ever consider a depiction as things that actually happened.
An interesting example, but kind of not related to something trying to be historical, is Fargo. They claimed it was based on a true story in the beginning credits, I believe, and it was 100% fictional. They wanted to draw the audience in more by stating that, from what I've heard.
I'm white. Let's say, just for the sake of discussion, that I'm a bigot. Why would I be frightened of some silly movie?

This article from the Smithsonian seems pretty accurate to me and you're correct, the Dahomey were very involved in the slave trade. The movie might be excellent but if it portrays them as not being involved in supplying slaves, it's not accurate. It's probably more of a fantasy film.

This encyclopedia Britannica article does seem to support your statement. At least the part about how they got rich and that the British did put an end to it. I haven’t seen the movie so I don’t know what other events are depicted though.

shareThat’s an interesting read. I’m sure that if this movie does well it will cause many people to do their own research into the Dahomey Empire. I only even know of this film because it appeared so often in the trending section here at MC, and I have enjoyed digging into the actual history of this time and place.

IMDB calls this film an alternate history. So it will be a mix of real and imagined characters and events. Looks entertaining though.
