Are You F-ing Kidding Me? (Spoilers)

That's how it ends, after investing 10 HOURS into the show?

Did they explain anything? So much MANUFACTURED tension.
A) Why do they only have one 10-watt light bulb in each room? Dark is CREEPY.
B) Why was Sean getting splinters? The first one was an accident and then he sanded the floor. Then, in the final, CRAPPY, episode, they suggest that Leanne was somehow punishing Sean with splinters? Really, she magically inserted them in his neck and throat? Why did he not see a doctor after losing his sense of taste for WEEKS?
C) How was Leanne able to make the baby appear/disappear at will?
D) Who did the baby belong to? Some cult member??? Was it Leanne's?
E) Was it just dumb, BAD LUCK, that Dorothy chose Leanne over the other nannies?? Who chooses a live in nanny without checking references.
F) So the little Black girl with the doll walks into the baptism party. HOW did she get there. It was implied that she followed the group back from the church. People drove to and from every baptism I have ever been to. I guess it is not IMPOSSIBLE that walked to the church and walked back, but highly, highly unlikely.
G) Why was Leanne acting so unevenly. One second, sorry I don't drink, then next downing bottles of wine and grabbing men' crotches. I guess maybe she was just sexually repressed and horny. Also creepy that Chef Toby was trying to go out with an eighteen year old bringing a wine bottle with two glasses to her bedroom.
H) What was with the feral dog? Did Leanne put it in the baby's room to protect it? After it got whacked and killed (maybe knocked out) Leanne goes into the basement where the dog was placed, and then it is alive (awake) and runs out of the house. What did she do down there?
I) What was with the crickets? I have had crickets in my house, and it sucks!!! Why were they only going to Leanne's room. Why did she awake with crickets all over her blanket? Crickets don't do that. They hide in the walls and chirp all night, and EVERYONE in the house an hear them.
J) NOBODY communicates. So much crazy shit happened that people just ignored or kept to themselves.
K) Why did Sean's alarm code not work the first night with the baby? Then Dorothy comes up and uses the same code? BAD WRITING. They just want you to suspect that something supernatural is going on, when it is not.
L) Why was Leanne not kicked out of the house the minute Julian returned from Wisconsin? They highly suspected that she was lying about her identity.

Acting was good, though Rupert and Toby's American accents floundered at times.
Frustrated the whole way, then the stupid, no answer final episode broke the camel's back for me.

My guesses:

B) It started after Sean destroyed her wooden crucifix. I guess he cursed himself with that. Crushed wood = splinters.

C) D) Either the baby was never real and Leanne creates an illusion out of the doll or she can summon dead Jericho by will.
My guess is, it is the original Jericho and no replacement baby (Either real or illusion).

E) Leanne has powers - it was her wish to get in that home, since she was interviewed by Dorothy at the Beauty-Contest as a child. And since Leanne holds powers - choosing her was no coincidence.

F) I accept the explanation the show gave us. She just followed the group - or Leanne made her follow - if you need another explanation.

G) She grew up in a religious cult. She holds powers but is very naive and doesn't know the outside world. So she takes steps.
My take was, that Tobe wasn't much older then Leanne. Maybe in his early 20s. The actor was 23 while filming. So - not so creepy.

H) Maybe Leanne summoned the dog by accident, to protect the families secret from Natalie.

I) That was in the episode where Julian tried to spook her out of the house. My only explanation is, that he and his handler put the crickets there and did the other things to frighten her.

J) That one bothered me too.

K) Part of the curse Sean put on himself (or Leanne put on him) maybe.

L) Either they were afraid they've broken the law by keeping the baby for so long, which has to belong to someone or Sean already believed, it is Leannes baby and made the plan to keep it - for Dorothy's and his own sake.

Eleazar,
You interpreted the show very differently than I did.
I don't believe Leanne had any supernatural powers. Hence all my questions.

reply

Without supernatural elements the show will get hard to explain. Like the last scene where all the cult members supposedly vanished.

I suspect all the cult members to be dead. We saw the News where the complex from the cult gets stormed and the explosion happened.

Even if the cult members survived I suspect they wouldn't be free to wander around.

If Leanne is dead or alive is open to me - maybe she is a beacon to dead people/ghosts.

A). Not only did the bulbs seem dim, the house had alot of dark colors. So that didn't help at all. But I did like the decor.
B). Good question. They dragged that to no end. But Leanne knows something. Did you catch the look on her face when Dorothy was pulling one out of his neck? I assume it's supernatural?
C) I was lost as to how that baby showed up after Julian had spent a whole hour looking for it. Very odd.
D). It was never clear. At one point, I didn't think it was hers. I thought she may have killed the original Leanne and took her baby for her own.
E) Leanne searched her out. She already knew who she was. But it wasn't clear (to me) how Dorothy picked her out,
F) She somehow got separated from her mother (Remember the Amber Alert) and straggled in with those people.
G) She was acting "unevenly" because she's mentally unstable. Toby bringing wine to the room baffled me.
H) I thought the dog was Uncle George. But what do I know.
I) I wish it was that easy to find a cricket when it's chirping. Her's came right out into the open for her! I hope they explain that in Season 2.
K) I don't think it was bad writing. Only because they made a point to clearly show the display while they pushed it. But still, I don't get why it didnt work for him.
L) IKR? I wondered the same thing.

reply

Oddly, a friend of mine mentioned just having watched this show. He assumed supernatural explanations and that Leanne was some kind of "spirit" that the cult has forced to be their "servant."
Obviously, my interpretation was very different. But I think that emphasizes how few answers we actually got.

M) How does one watch this and not assume a supernatural element to the entire plot?

reply

They should have cast Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Jericho.
