This one looks like it might be fun but I've never seen anything but the original, so can I watch this and understand the characters without knowing what happened previously?

I will disagree with that. IMHO the sequels are far better. Funnier for all ages, more engaging etc.

The original was darker, a little scary.
Kid was getting bullied. then gets lost in a game assumed kidnapped and missing. Keeps your attention.
Today's movies look all green screen screen, landscapes look too perfect and to colorful.
You have a grown man in jack black acting like a little girl in the 2nd one.
Just zero soul. nothing there.
