Had the undeground dungeon built beforehand for just such a case?

I wondered about that too! I was waiting for an explanation about why the dungeon was there. Could it have been like a fallout shelter, and he was able to just add some locks and chains last minute?

IMO it was absolutely a fall out shelter. So many were built in the 50's and 60's, I'm sure that's what it was.

No, most likely a fallout shelter. A lot of people built them in the 50's and 60's. I'm sure a rich family like the Monroes would have had one built.

Many rich people have bomb shelters. In fact a lot of houses built in the cold war scare era built them if there was enough space.
