Brilliant. Emotional. Powerful.

Superb. This was exceptional. Peter Jackson and his team painstakingly took 100 year old archive footage and somehow rendered it into HD. An absolute triumph. Very emotional to hear what the soldiers were going through. Should be compulsory viewing in schools or something. 9/10

I gave it 9/10 as well. I think the schools where I am are getting copies of this. It was good to see a family on their way, somewhere, all sporting poppies yesterday. It was amazing how vivid the scenes are in the film.

This was indeed a brilliant piece of documentary film-making. Made me upset to know veterans weren't appreciated for what they fought for when they came home, this film did them proud. Thank you Peter Jackson.

WWI seems like it was just a continuation of killing off the excess population of the lower class or rendering them crippled so they would not threaten the political order of the royals. The way they marched thousands of men in front of machine guns and called them noble heroes for it was disgusting. A good WWI movie is Stanley Kubrick's "Paths Of Glory".

Britain's participation in the war was not an abstract ideological exercise. Germany was attempting to take over Europe, violently. They had to be stopped. The men who went across the Channel to stop them were heroes.

I don't think anyone is saying that the men who fought and died in the war weren't heroes (I sincerely hope not anyway) but they did not consider themselves such. It is easy to watch and say in hindsight that the whole thing was pure madness but this was 100 years ago, attitudes and culture were completely alien to what we have now. I found it fascinating to watch a film that is so far apart from what we experience now, closest thing to stepping through a time machine. Hats off to everyone involved, they did em' proud.

Lions led by donkeys, didn't they say?

Where does that quote come from?

Wikipedia says:

There seems to be a little confusion as to who actually originated it!
