Family at the Beginning of the Movie?

I can’t seem to connect the beginning of the movie (Kristin, Bobby, Richard) with the family that we see throughout the rest of the movie, (Ellie, Kyle, Amy and Christopher). Is there any connection?

I don't think so, except for the main vampire guy. I took it to be an earlier attempt of his to make some sort of family.
