Way too derivative for "classic" status

Rosemary's Baby, The Blackcoat's Daughter, Kill List, The Lords of Salem, The House of The Devil, The Exorcist 3...

Hereditary is a slickly produced movie with great music and cinematography but its still a grab bag of "best of..." bits from different, more original films.

reply

It's 2018, "original" horror films just don't get made anymore.
This didn't need to be original, it hit all the right spots and it was more effective than any other horror film for the past 20 years. The fact that it borrows certain elements from other films has no effect on the quality of the film at all.

Uh, most of the films I mentioned, like "The Blackcoat's Daughter", "Kill List", "The Lords of Salem", and "The House of The Devil" aren't exactly ancient.

Throw in films like "The Witch" and "It Follows" and I'd say horror films are still capable of being original without necessarily being a patchwork of their influences.

reply

Every single film you have mentioned borrows elements from other horror films.....And Hereditary is vastly superior to all of them.

reply

Hereditary isn't vastly superior to anything. You must be a part of the films staff to defend this garbage.

reply

LMAO what a baby! This film is has been highly praised by the majority of critics and people and just because YOU personalyl didn't enjoy it, you actually think people have been paid to pretend to like the film?
WTF is wrong with you? Were you dropped as a baby? Are you recovering from a recent head injury?
This film is fucking good, son. Every single person I know who has watched it, loved it too.
It is YOU who is the problem! Not the film!
No one is pretending to like it, you deluded twat!
Seriously, I cannot even imagine what kind of empty headed monkey thought this film was "trash" lol
Have you not seen the praise this film is getting from the majority of people? lol And you are SO full of yourself that you assume it's some kind of conspiracy, you PATHETIC MAN!

Oh and you have shit taste in film.

reply

lol this shillbot repeats the same braindead comments in every thread here. amazin !

reply

Accept, it's not the same comment is it? lol
Unless you're a complete dumbass of course. I am sure to you, they all look the same.....

reply

If this guy, or his posts or opinions had any value to them at all, he might be worth arguing with. Click on his name and then click IGNORE. There's no point in arguing with this little hemorrhoid. The boards are much better without him.

reply

I have read the praise given by critics, which is why I was excited to watch this.

After initial veiwing, I began to question the validity of those critics praise.

I guess that makes me a deluded baby monkey twat recovering from a head injury too.

The world owes you a great deal of gratitude for your excellent taste in films.

reply

Yep, that does make you a "deluded baby monkey twat recovering from a head injury", fair play for admitting it! One thing you've gotten wrong though: You don't function properly, evidently by the fact you can watch a brilliantly made and acted film and see it as "trash"
I hope you didn't see this film in the cinema, because that is very insensitive to the staff who have to clean the dribble off of your seat after you've gone.

Well, don't let it get to you, we can't all have good taste in film.
I'm sure you are probably more of a gamer n that's fine.
Just maybe not waste your time with films made for open minded and intelligent people like this one.
Ah well, The Nun will be in cinemas soon, so there is still hope for you.

I'm sure there will be lots of jump scares n CGI to keep your tiny, little mind entertained.

reply

That's good stuff right there. Your intelligence is boundless.

reply

LMAO You'd like that, wouldn't you?

reply

...what would I like??

Your statement dosent make any sense.

reply

lol If I were triggered obviously...

But no, I'm just taking the piss because it amuses me.
I do think you have shit taste in film but I don't particularly care about it lol.
I'm sure, other than that you're great!

And I wish you a speedy recovery :-)

reply

You're a peculiar person Ralph.

reply

I've been called peculiar before actually.

reply

I liked the movie but you need to chill. Your friends liking it is evidence of nothing.

reply

I thought of Rosemary's Baby as soon as she spat out that little tealeaf from joan's cup, made me think of the tannis root. RB is a rewatchable film, this one not so much imo. Not that I didn't like it, just an acquired taste & definitely not for fans of saw/hostel and the like.

reply

"definitely not for fans of saw/hostel and the like." LMAO, yeah you can say that again. (Not for morons basically)

reply

Every movie that could ever be made today regardless of its genre is derivative off of something else. It’s just the way to t is.

Like the song goes “Once the stories told, it can’t help but grow old”

reply

Sometimes I think we give too much credit to films that are original and not enough credit to films that are just good.

If one thinks Hereditary would've been a great film if it had been released a long time ago, then I think you might as well call it a "classic"
I mean, it would still be an amazing experience for someone who hasn't seen those other films.

Side note: I'm not saying

Side note: I know one can argue that many shitty films from 2018 would have been called "classics" if they had been released in the 60s, simply because they would have been ground breaking back then.
But, to me, a "classic" is not just a ground breaking film. If you ask "would this have been as good if it was released in 2018?" and that answer isn't YES, then maybe it's not really a great film. It can still be a milestone in film history, but if it doesn't hold up today it's more of a historical document than a great watch.

I often think film buffs give too much credit to films just because they were ground breaking.
I hate when someone says: "Ok, this film is not the best film in this genre. But it was a pioneer, so it's still a great movie".

If that was the case then it would mean all films who were released a long time ago would deserve higher scores, and films that are released later in the same style, are automatically punished with a lower score.

reply

This is much better than new "classics" like The Babadook and The Witch

reply

I saw Rosemary's Baby years ago, after knowing about it for so long, and I wasn't impressed. Was the fact that Satan was the father meant to mean something? An actor wearing prosthetics and red contact lenses back then may have been impressive, but I see that stuff all the time in sci-fi shows.

reply

You don’t like a classic for ... reasons.

Congrats on being a rebel, bro.

reply

Please, enlighten me: How is Rosemary's Baby a "classic"?

I consider "The Omen" and "The Exorcist" to be classics, but not this one.

reply

Rosemarys Baby is far superior to both those films.

reply

Rosemary's Baby is not even close in quality to The Exorcist.

reply

yes. it is. it exceeds it.

reply

Not even close.

reply

Rosemary's Baby and the Exorcist (first) are some of my all-time favorite movies. Hereditary borrows much too heavily from both of these (and other horror films). The movie tried very hard to be scary or creepy, but in order to be a successful horror film, a writer/director can't simply borrow elements from previous films and string them all together into a weak story line.

I felt like I had wasted 2 hours of my life. I was expecting better.

reply

I think it's so so interesting what makes something terrifying for one person and not another. I can see why ppl think that there are a lot of "things we've seen before", but for me they felt fresh (except that ending). There was something abt the way this film was done that allowed it to get away w using certain imagery and plot points and still have it be creepy AF. I actually also have never seen a film handle the immediate aftermath of a tragic death the way this one did w the son in shock just going upstairs and leaving the body in the car for the family to find. That whole thing had my jaw on the floor.
