When Did This Movie Tip Its Hand? SPOILERS!!!

For me it started when Annie met Joanie. I’ve seen enough movies of this type to know something was off about her, that something was phony & that it was a setup. Not bragging but I seen it coming from a mile away.

Then the seance certainly didn’t ease my suspicions, then when she said “Hey! You can do this at home! I’ll give you this to read out loud, you’ll be up & running in no time!”

That pretty much cemented it for me. Sure, “I’ll give you this magical incantation in some ancient language to read, no worries!” Uh kids, just in case you need me to tell you, don’t do it if the situation is ever presented to you. Yeah I know most of you know it, obviously she (Annie) didn’t.

What irks me is how the hell was she able to read it? Never mind speak it correctly?
Plot hole anyone? Yeah, yeah Joanie could’ve told her but would you have remembered by the time you got home?

I think by the time the movie goes supernatural it kinda goes off the rails quite a bit. Too bad cause I really did think it was an expertly crafted, suspenseful family drama up until that point. I even went a long with the seance because it really did seem more like a scene where we were watching a woman slowly losing her mind but then like I said, the supernatural turns real and the movie kinda loses itself.

It’s not a problem that you noticed Joanie was up to no good - the director gave plenty of clues that she wasn’t what she claimed to be well in advanced.

The words Annie spoke could’ve easily been written out phonetically - the idea being it’s not the words themselves, it’s the correct syllables pronounced in the proper order.

Literally, the very moment Annie character stumbles onto her mother's books about spiritualism and the letter about how it all will be worth it the end, I just knew we would be dealing with cultish crap.

Joanne (Joanie?) was suspicious enough (you can't introduce a good samaritan like that in a horror and expect it to be just that); I wish they wouldn't have had Annie mentioning how her doormat was exactly like the ones her mother used to make and settled for a subtler glance of recognition so as to not telegraph Joanne knew Ellen other so early, but what can you do.

I still hoped there would be a twist and the cult crap was just a red herring and there would be something more insidious (no pun intended) about Annie's family history but, alas, no such luck. I thought the ending was the weaker link.

The ending was by far the weak link for me too. I didnt like it all. I liked the previous 95% of the film. I was hoping it wouldnt go cult angle but it did. Tho I can say I didnt expect that at all until we saw the box of Joanne's stuff. At that point on it was obvious it was a cult I was just hoping for something different.
