Margo and the Russians

Margo may have had noble intentions, but she has crossed a line. The end of S2 set us up for what was to come. She has been actively helping the Soviet Union's space programme. That is treason in anyone's book. It is amazing that such an intelligent, capable woman has allowed herself to become an intelligence asset for the Russians.

reply

Yes she has crossed the line. I think the writers of the show will write her back across to the right side of the line instead of letting her fall.

So far NOT so good, unless Radiohead's "Everything in Its Right Place" is a HAPPY song to you.

I'm not ruling out redemption and forgiveness in a later season, but Margot's always been something of a tragic character. Having her wind up like Edward Snowden seems consistent with the show.

That's how it happens though -- you start helping a friend, for noble intentions, then they need a little more help... then their friends at the KGB threaten to blackmail you and expose your illegal (but noble, for the good of all mankind) activities, if you don't play ball and do some less noble illegal activities for them. If that doesn't work they threaten someone you care about, and suddenly you're in a lot deeper than you expected.

reply

Yeah, I'm sure CIA and MI5 do it too, but that sort of blackmail is SO strongly associated with the KGB that they came up with the term "kompromat" just to describe it.

Like that "Broken Arrow" film quote from Frank Whaley: "I don't know what's scarier, that it happens or that it happens so often there's a name for it."

reply

I always thought that was a stupid line. The theft of a nuclear weapon is called Empty Quiver. Broken Arrow is the term used for the loss of a nuclear weapon that does not create a risk of war.

Not sure, but I think the term broken arrow was coined by the military for the loss of nukes prior to it ever happening.

reply

Well it was a neat-sounding line, but I agree it's not logical.

The military, U.S. in particular, is so logistics-obsessed that it seems natural to individually name every conceivable scenario.

reply

Yeah under duress she got caught up. I'm ambivalent about her character.
I think she knew where to draw the line. This was a weak sub-plot, and it
served to further demonize Russia in the real world.

We can see how societies brainwash their people towards other people and
countries. Odd that Russia does not really do that against the US. A lot of
Russians like the US, more than Americans like Russia. Everything we see
about Russia is transmitted through the prison of media manipulation.

There is plenty wrong with Russia and China, and North Korea ... but the US
has had plenty of opportunity to make peace with and trade and influence
Russia ... but there is a reason we did not ... because we are at war with
Russia since their communist revolution, still.

It's a lot more complicated than just TV shows tell us. They always show Russia
as being the cold cruel inhuman ones ... but the US has dominated the world,
not Russia. Russia has been on the defensive, the US on the offensive.

Anyway, it is most likely that the CIA or FBI would try to make use of Margo in
counter-intelligence than taking someone at such a high level and tossing her
in the trash. Intelligence agencies have been playing these games for centuries
and they are experts and exploiting people - on both sides.
