Female astronauts! What will they think up next?
Who'd scrub the stains from the space suits?
shareI graduated from a military high school in the US that has a very distinct honor...it graduated two astronauts who walked on the moon...we're the only high school in the world that has that distinction.
One of them visited my school just before I graduated to speak with the senior class about the space program ...which was just before the first moon landing.
He talked about being an astronaut, the road he took getting there, prospects for future manned space flight and a few other topics. At the end, he asked for questions.
I really don't know why the thought came to mind...it's not like I was a feminist...but, I raised my hand. He pointed at me to indicate I should ask my question.
I said, "Sir...the Soviets have had women in their space program for years. When do you think the US will have female astronauts?"
I will never forget his terse, 4-word response.
He said, "Son...it'll never happen" and pointed his finger at the next cadet who had his hand raised.
No other comment...no explanation...no reason...
