Very Positive and Creative

It was s classic and positive American war movie but also had some creative story telling. Naturally, the main character had to deal with racism. But instead of the the typical and obvious portrayal of that issue via one dimensional bigoted caricatures, they had Jesse make the racist comments to himself in a mirror, repeating some terrible things people had said to him since he was a boy. In this way, the character appropriated all the power from that negativity and used it to motivate and strengthen himself. I thought that was very creative story telling and I thought Majors was very compelling and intense when he acted that scene. What was truly unique about it was the camera made us - the audience - the symbolic mirror to all those horrible statements. It was a very powerful message to me. I hope more people will see this movie and not dismiss it because there were some very thoughtful ideas that went into this story.

I haven’t seen it but I did read up on the man’s life story. The actual account said a stray rifle shot had probably nicked his fuel line. Is that how it is depicted in the film?

reply

That is how it was depicted (although the character said it was an oil line). It was a terrible irony because earlier in the war he was involved in low level attack on a heavily defended bridge and somehow came through without a scratch. Yet one lone North Korean soldier somehow gets a lucky shot with a bolt action rifle that brings him down. Where did you read up on the guy? I’d love to read the life story you saw. Wonder what became of his daughter too

reply

His family legacy was covered a bit in the end, noting how their families kept in touch, actually work together to keep his legacy alive and search for his remains in North Korea.

"You focus so many posts on race. What is the point? I'm tired of all the political shots being taken in every thread but measuring by whose race is more powerful. I love my fellow citizens and try to find common ground regardless of what they look like."

reply

It’s not a sign of cleverness to take a comment of mine from another thread and apply it out of context here. My criticism of your posts in the above quote remains accurate. Your posts seem consumed by race regardless of relevance and it’s not right to boast of the power of your favored race against another. It’s transparently negative and designed to provoke other people. That is the complete opposite of my comments on this movie and my sincere intentions here.

reply

I was responding to the snowflake OPs comments, which were about race, and you had the audicity to complain that *I* talk about race too much. I have rarely seen a group of more racist white babies in my life than on moviechat. tRump supporters really need to stop blaming other people for their miserable lives.

P. S. I'm white and you're now on ignore.

reply

I’m not surprised. Many of your posts are indefensible. You use the victimization of children for political points. You use ugly gay stereotypes as pejoratives. And you spout racial power narratives (just from the other side). It’s easier to ignore someone than be confronted by the fact that you use the identical tools as the bigots you criticize on the right.

Boring AF. I stopped watching about 60 min in.
