So does everyone now agree that this was awful?
Now that the bullshit cloud has dissipated, can we all just agree that this was utter trash?
shareNow that the bullshit cloud has dissipated, can we all just agree that this was utter trash?
shareI only watched a tiny bit of it, and spent much more time on criticism reviews of the episodes. I find these days that such criticism is much more entertaining than the shows themselves!
I also know is that the shittiness will continue, as I've just heard that the LOTR:ROP showrunners have FIRED all of the MALE writers! It may be a rumour, mind, but I wouldn't put it past them to have actually done that.
Dunno about the writers but they announced that all directors in season 2 will be women.
As if that's the show's main problem.
Any male still working on the show was part of the problem. Anyone who wanted to make an accurate Tolkien show would've left long before. Look at Henry Cavill, a fan of the Witcher books and games who quit the Witcher show because he realized it was only going to get worse.
shareI knew from the start it was going to be bad. Several clues dating as far back as 2018 gave me a bad vibe that was proven to be right:
- Hollywood, including Amazon Studios, was already known to follow the toxic "woke" trend, which is honestly destroying the entertainment industry on a massive scale. I'd already seen them chew up and spit out at least two or three franchises by that point, and I knew LOTR had to be next.
- LOTR is a 20-year-old trilogy of films, and it was only a matter of time before some young idiot in Hollyweird decided to cash in on it and "reboot" or "reinterpret" the lore.
- The lower quality of the Hobbit film trilogy of films was something of an omen of things to come in the latter half of the 2010s
- hearing about the studio firing their one Tolkien expert and hiring on an "intimacy coordinator" after throwing out their first version of Season 1 was not a good sign
- I heard about what they did with "Wheel of Time," and it appears the idiots working at Amazon Studios didn't learn a damned thing from that dumpster fire. As a sign of their stupidity, they just doubled down on the same disgusting formula they and every other studio in Hollyweird had been following.
- My fears were confirmed when I saw the preview photos featuring a not-so-pretty Galadriel as a warrior princess in armor that had the star of an elven household she loathed and despised in the actual Tolkien lore on her chest, a black elf with mostly-shaved hair, a black dwarf with nuclear mushroom cloud hair and no beard, a black queen in armor, and a short-haired elf guy that was supposedly Elrond, but looked more like Dougie Hauser if he'd put on elf ears and a giant has smashed him in the chin. The cheap-looking costumes just made it look even worse.
- Hearing that Amazon had two stupid, immature writers whose career in Hollywood consisted of uncredited writing for a not-so-great Star Trek film, and only had access to the Appendices of the books, did not bode well either
So...
Waisted you money again?
Good to hear.
Must be awful to hear "I told you so" so often your nose bleeds.
The current IMDB rating of 6.9 is not bad. General consensus is that viewers kind of like it.
I didn't mind the show that much, but I'm not a Tolkien fanatic either. I'm sure the big fans of Tolkien probably hated this. haha...
Ohhh well, it is what it is. At least it gave people something to complain about.
"I'm sure the big fans of Tolkien probably hated this. haha..."
As if that is a plus point.
So you like a show more, knowing that it's fan base might not like it, rather than the quality of the show itself?
You are strange.
Now knowing that only 37% of viewers kept watching after the first episode, don't you think it's pretty important that it's built in fanbase should be catered for, or even the quality of the show itself is important? Or is your brain such a mush that you can't see past your nose and only see "angry nerds" so you can get your rocks off for a brief moment.
Well, let's see how badly the second season will do and your new fave show disappear. But hey, as long as some basement dwelling nerds were disgruntled, ey? That was well worth watching 8 hours of dreck.
Fact is, most weren't disgruntled, they watched the first episode or saw the trailer, then never thought about the show again. Hence, the low ratings.
Disgruntled, more like disinterested.
You have a vivid imagination, mitzi.
I never said I liked it because it upset the LOTR nerds. I just said I didn't mind the show that much. I thought it was pretty good entertainment and has a few things about it that I found kind of interesting.
If you didn't like it that's fine but the people that decided not to watch it based on the trailer alone can fuck off. You can't judge a movie or a TV show by simply watching the trailer. You have to actually watch an episode or two then decide if you want to watch the rest.
As for the second season, who knows what might happen? It could be good or it could be bad or perhaps something in between. We just have to wait and see.
> You can't judge a movie or a TV show by simply watching the trailer.
Erm..............that's the job of the trailer.
To attract people to watch. Spend time, spend MONEY.
So you're saying that all of the general public within the history of trailers, who decided not to watch/purchase/consume something based on the marketing material presented to them can F off just because YOU chose to?
What are your feelings about advertisements? So if a company put out an ad for sand soap, and people decided not to purchase the product of soap with sand in it, based on the marketing material, you laugh at them for making a choice not to spend their hard-earned money on Sand Soap?
YOU liked Sand Soap, so others who chose not to use Sand Soap can F off, and if the original fans of Sand Soap don't like the new inferior ingredients you get a kick out of it?
I quote:
> I'm sure the big fans of Sand Soap probably hated this. haha...
haha Hilarious with a capital H!
You misunderstood me again.
If you decide to not watch a TV show or movie based on the trailer that is fine but you cannot say the show (or movie) sucks by the trailer alone... PERIOD! That would be just plain ignorant. And judging a film or show before the trailer is even released is actually worse. I would call that completely stupid.
>As for the second season
Yeh, they'll waste more money on a second season until the producers get fired.
>who knows what might happen?
We do. It will be bad. Just like the first season. Hence the massive drop off from the premiere. The people have spoken. You liked it, fair enough. I like Friday the 13th movies. I don't hold it against people who say they are bad, because at least I know they are bad. But at least they made profit and people stuck around multiple times.
>It could be good or it could be bad or perhaps something in between.
No, it will be bad, bomb like the first season then get dumped. Then they will blame the fans for its failure like they always do. Even after they insulted the fans with their combative marketing strategy which drummed up controversy by calling the fans racists.
Alienating an in-built fanbase is not the best strategy, but you seemed to like it. I quote: "haha"
> We just have to wait and see.
Just like the first season where the viewership didn't wait and see if the quality rose beyond episode one? People won't wait and see, hence the massive viewership drop past the premier of the first season.
>You have to actually watch an episode or two then decide if you want to watch the rest.
The people did, then chose not to.
And no people are not obliged to sink 1 to 2 hours into something after watching a trailer., add to that spending money on a subscription.
The marketing material is not a contract we get tricked into where we MUST view at least 1 to 2 hours before deciding to watch more.
Are you on crack, smack, amphetamine or glue?
Have you ever decided not to watch a single episode of a season based on the initial marketing material? Don't lie to me bro, you have.
I do find some humor in all this. People get so fired up over movies and TV shows that really don't matter that much. So, sure I chuckled just a bit at the LOTR geeks getting mad over this.
I understand their complaints though. LOTR is considered classic literature and should be treated with respectful hands. That being said, I don't see the major crime in this show, it's so far from the books that the only thing it really has in common with LOTR is the name. In my opinion, it really isn't "that" bad. I do think the first season could have been a lot better. Even so, I found it to be somewhat entertaining.
I do agree, it's not a good marketing strategy to call people "racists" that was a dumb thing to say. It sounds like this is the reason why you didn't watch it. You decided to just say "no" when you read an article on them criticizing fans. It's okay if that was your decision but I like the LOTR stories and so I went ahead and watched it anyways. You should give it a try. You might like it.
And believe it or not, this show is NOT universally hated. It currently has a 6.9 rating on IMDB. Which means, the general consensus is that people found it to be "good". It also has a solid critic score of 71 on metacritic.
While I don't put a lot of stock into online reviews and ratings I do think a lot of people did enjoy it and will probably watch season 2. At any rate, judging films and TV shows is quite subjective anyways.
>It sounds like this is the reason why you didn't watch it.
Because they called the fans racists to drum up controversy and articles?
I didn't watch it because it looked bad, and word of mouth was poor.
>It currently has a 6.9 rating on IMDB.
And the audience score of 38% on RT. Your point being?
Yeh, I'd trust Amazon not to do everything they can to tamper with ratings, just like they tampered with the Amazon ratings. You are aware that they deleted negative ratings from their own site to hide the fact that people thought it was dire?
Only 37% of people watched beyond episode one. That's the only metric I'm looking at.
73% drop off.
>You should give it a try. You might like it.
I might like sticking my hand in a fire.
>I might like sticking my hand in a fire.
Or you might be sticking your hand in a pot of gold.
One man's trash is another man's treasure.
At least watch the first 2 episodes. I am curious to see what you think of it. And try to be unbiased. lol..
Are you a huge Tolkien fan? I can see how really big fans might not like it but casual fans would probably find it entertaining.
Judging shows and movies is very subjective anyways which is why you have to watch it in order to judge it.
>Or you might be sticking your hand in a pot of gold.
Look Mr Bezos. I saw the trailer, word of mouth, poor reviews, Rotten Tomatoes user rating, the 73% drop off, clips of the awful dialogue.
No I am not spending my hard earned money on Amazon Prime to watch dreck.
>Are you a huge Tolkien fan?
No. I've never read Lord of the Rings and never really knew much about it until I watched Fellowship of the Rings on DVD rental a couple of years after its release after hearing a lot of good word of mouth.
>Judging shows and movies is very subjective anyways which is why you have to watch it in order to judge it.
My judgment is not to sink my time and money on something that I don't like the look of, seen clips of where it looks like dreck, and heard that it's pretty dire.
Mr Bezos, why are you failing to grasp that one simple thing?
Freedom of choice.
Can't afford it, huh? I used to be broke like you but I took more chances and didn't listen to what the whiners and complainers were saying about the rich and powerful. Instead of feeling bad about making money I decided to take more chances on various financial adventures. And I'm better off for it, at least for now. Who knows what might happen in the future.
All I can say is, don't listen to the naysayers, anyone can do it, even you!
And never listen to the LOTR:RoP reviewers either, think for yourself.
>Can't afford it, huh?
Ha haaa Shaming tactics now, Mr. Bezos?
I suppose we should go to see every crappy movie and waste our time and money or you will shame us for being too poor? ha haa moron.
>Instead of feeling bad about making money
What on earth are you rambling about? We're talking about deciding whether or not to watch a crappy TV show, not the financial adventures of Stickman.
You're lost man.
>I used to be broke like you
Ad hominem logical fallacy
Lighten up, Francis.
shareYou're the one attempting to shame somebody into watching something they don't want to.
I didn't want to watch Black Adam, because the marketing material presented didn't attract me to it. Add to that poor word of mouth.
Are you going to shame me for not sinking my time and money into Black Adam?
Or the Hobbit films, because I ignored them too.
Besides, I've pretty much watched half of Rings of Dour in Riff Trax format, laughing at the awful dialogue and dumb logic. Much more interesting.
Yes, I will shame you. Hahaa...
Jokes aside, you should definitely watch The Hobbit films. I thought they were really good.
" It currently has a 6.9 rating on IMDB." 6.9 for a show on IMDB is awful.
For some reason usually shows are around 1 point higher scored than movies. Usually only the shows over 8 worth a watch.
And it has a 6.9 only due to a lot of undeserved ratings of 10.
Let's remember a better metric: only 37% of the viewers actually finished the show. That IS awful ...
And the show WAS awful, yes, I watched it. IT SUCKS.
It has some issues, I will agree. But I did like a few of the characters and it has decent entertainment value. But yeah, a slightly better script would've worked wonders for this show. The RoP story itself is kind of interesting... a better writer could've created something quite spectacular here. Missed opportunity in my view.
However, I wouldn't say "it sucks". I thought it was better than the first season of HotD. But not by much... both inaugural seasons left a lot to be desired.
Agree to disagree, HotD was a LOT better. RoP had A LOT of problems, a LOT of moments when I was like "wtf just happened? How did this shit get a greenlight??"
The only character in RoP that was good and had a nice backstory and a decent motivation was Adar. And apparently he will not be present in the second season.
