Is the problem trying to understand them or.that they are trying to sound deeper than they are?

One thing to consider is that this was a time when they didn't have a whole lot of science to explain things. They would often use myths to come up with an answer.

I see the ship and stone analogy at work here. To a young person, this would be a reasonable explanation as to why a ship floats.
