Nathan actually looks better with a little more weight on him, no? These days he looks too frail.
Also, I like him better as a rascal (Castle) than in an action role (The Rookie). Anyone else?
He lost a lot of weight for sure. It is a bit weird seeing him play it straight after firefly and castle.
shareI think they did that on purpose to show him fat and kind of clumsy at the beginning of the show, and then the job whips him into shape. Same with the captain, they must be working out together.

I know he had some back and knee problems a few years ago so had put on some extra kilos due to not being able to exercise.
Getting older is rough enough so I can’t imagine how much harder it must be with the spotlight of Hollywood also on you. He looks great for someone who will be 50 next year.
And to be honest although I think he shines in a comedy/rascal role, it’s just great to see him still having a top-notch career where he’s still on our screens yearly.
