She had a tragic life, and this film perfectly portrays that. It would be terrible if they sugarcoated her story to make the audience feel happy.

I doubt there were that many happy moments. They worked her flat out for years on end and totally controlled her life. I don't know if there is an autobiography but I suspect her happy moments consisted of an odd day off here and there and just being able to relax.

You "doubt" it because of your extreme assumption due to her fame. We will never know how many genuine happy moments vs.unhappy moments she had, despite her drug-addiction & emotional instability. You'd have to ask her (if you could). An unhappy pallor over her life does not mean she was in acute-pain from minute to minute--hour by hour--day to day. (nor how many days she "relaxed")
You're describing her like a symbol, not an individual.

I'm sure her childhood had some amazing moments but they just wanted to make us feel sorry for her.

From the biographies I've read, as a child, she seemed to enjoy entertaining and appreciated her voice -- even though she was on the stage from the age of three.

Her problems began at MGM -- over worked and over medicated for diet and energy. Filming one film, while rehearsing the next.

Add to that, she had a low opinion of her physical appearance when she compared herself to some of the beauties at MGM.

The studio didn't help any, because when she came to them at the age of 13, they knew her voice was exceptional, but they didn't know what to do with her (at that awkward age.) To paraphrase Garland, "You either had to be a Shirley Temple or a voluptuous siren."

Consequently, the studio cast her in a number of pictures, where she was the "pal" or buddy, never the desired love interest. This further undermined her feeling of self-worth. Remember, the girl was in her formative years. Pain at that time tends to stay with you.

yeah..we should all have such pain for being cast as pal or buddy in such a fortunate profession. Most actresses are elated to be cast at all. You are writing the script of her feelings based on your fixated-sentiment (like the Marilyn Monroe board) Let us form our own objective opinions..remember.

You're being unnecessarily combative.

There's a lot of biographical information on Judy Garland and all of it points to a woman who had an unhappy and tumultuous life. She was insecure, overworked, over-stressed and, by the end, having serious financial problems.

I'm sure she had days and periods where life was better, and I'm sure it wasn't misery every waking moment. But there is insurmountable evidence to show that her life could not be called a happy one.
