'I could have been a contender.'
I don't understand this line. Anybody does?

reply

The line is spoken by Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront. He plays a longshoreman who was once a prizefighter. The dialogue that follows the line is, “instead of a bum, which is what I am.”

reply

Nice. Although I cannot find any connection with this movie.

I haven’t seen the movie that is the subject of your topic, maya, but, judging from the context of the dialogue you quote from it, I infer that the character (Nina) feels that she could have been someone great (“a contender” [for a champion’s crown]) if only she had the proper support.
