Although it is stylish and beautifully shot, director Antonio Campos' distance from his characters robs this often brutally violent hillbilly gothic drama of crucial emotional context.

I had trouble with the plot. Whose story is being told here? And why should we care? Yes, there was talent in the making of the movie, but something's missing.

Sadly this seems to happen with so many Netflix movies, I really don't know what it is but they all seem to be devoid of humanity in a strange way . . .like they are soulless.

The acting was very good , the story compelling. I enjoyed the eras explored , the music. But it felt as incomplete snippets of each of these characters’ lives, disjointed from the whole. The story tried to weave the connection between characters but it was choppy.
Yes, it’s one of those films that feels like it lost a layer of characterization from the novel it was adapted from.
