A very rich documentary
The stories that this movie tells about this family (its past and present) are emotional, intimate, and perceptively layered together. It does asks some things of its viewer— that you have patience, give it your full attention, and try to reserve judgement— but, in return, it rewards with a richly complicated, beautifully honest look into the lives and experinces that this family shares. You get to see what they’ve been through as well as how things continue to play out. I don’t much believe in plot summaries— thus my vagary here— but I found it to be incredibly moving film. It has crossed my mind many times after seeing it.
Between all that’s going on, it’s hard to imagine a viewer not finding some deeply meaningful, resonate truths in the characters and their story. It’s hard to write any kind of synopsis because there is so much to it, but it is easily in my top 10 documentaries of 2017. I hope it continues to get attention for a long time, because it deserves it. It feels like a true labor of love (from all involved), and it has the ability to help others understand, heal and learn from some of life’s most difficult challenges.
