….was when he saw the photo of his mother which had 'Love you' written on the back side by Thomas Wayne with his initials.

It was at this point, he realised that his mother was right about the whole relationship. He was almost devastated so much that it was beyond mourning for him. He was terribly speechless to realize that he murdered his innocent mother.

An ultimate jolt of shock it was. He turned truly psychotic & hopeless at this point and its here he got transformed into 'Joker' in true sense.

The whole flood of anger, frustration, agony was unleashed on Randall. You can see his wet eyes when he sat down after killing Randall.

Before this crucial snap, he always had an intention to commit suicide at Murray's show.
But its after this event, he decided not to but kill Murray.

So Thomas Wayne faked the asylum papers about Penny?

That is easily done for a powerful figure such as Thomas Wayne, to gaslight Penny.

How about the possibility that Penny faked the writing on the back of the photo? That could also be easily done. Moreover, she was diagnosed with narcisism.

Or they did have an affair, but it didn't result in her becoming pregnant with Arthur.

... because Martha had already given birth to "mad" Arthur - whom they kept locked up in attic - years before Penny started working for them. They then pinned Bruce v1.0 on her as her adopted child, leaving them free to have another child. This explains why Arthur is clearly older than 30.

Its definitely a possibility in reality.

But for this discussion, we have to think what Arthur thought.

He believed in the writing on the photo and he believed that the affair was for real. And that's why he cracked. Just after he saw the photo, the door knocked as Randall & Gary arrived. Everything is then explained. His furiousity and outburst.
