The main reason was the film had a lot of similarities to The King of Comedy so it was an obvious choice to reverse the roles and this time have DeNiro be the object of the protagonist's desire/disdain.

With such similarities to King of Comedy and Taxi Driver... Deniro was perfect for that role.
Yes, and De Niro was actually good. Unlike his previous embarrasing movies (e.g., Dirty Granpa, etc.)
In fact, I'd say De Niro should ONLY accept this kind of roles, really, instead of ridiculous lame comedies nobody cares.
