Stingray...Awful character
Really, he reminded me of Screech from Saved By the Bell! Worst character ever! Why on earth did they add such a terrible character? He did not fit with the tone of the show at all!

shareYeah I really didn't care for him and aside from not fitting the tone of the show, the character served no real purpose. There's plenty of comedic relief elsewhere on the show so he's not even necessary in that respect.
shareI know right? You have character like Demetri who gives comic relief and it feels organic. But Stingray ?! The character feels so forced on us and his scenes are so nonsensical! Hope they cut him off next season. He adds nothing to the show
shareWait really? I took it the other way around. I thought Stingray brought the comic relief and Demetri was the dweeb that was too flimsy, weak, puny to do any fighting until later on in the season. In my mind it was Demetri that reminded me of Screech since he's the Game of Thrones, comic nerd, Dungeons and Dragons.
shareNah, I understand your point but to me personally Demetri reminds me of people I actually knew in high school, he is actually believable to me even if he is not everybodies cup of tea. He was there from the begining and he has an interesting history with hawk. Stingrays on the other hand is unrealistic to the max. What sort of grown man would hang out so much with Teens? And the scene where he ties two beer bottle into his hands? Again, the guy is well past his 30s. And that scene were for some reason he apply for a job at the school only to beat the crap out of kids right in front of the supervisor. Stingray is like a cartoon characters and he serves no purpose at all except for "Comic relief". Every time he pops on screen it trows me off the show because his scenes are nonsensical .
shareLol, you could say its similar in a sense to why grown adults still watch super hero movies. Kevin Smith is a grown adult but still dresses like a kid and I wouldn't be surprised if he hung out with some teens.
He was an audience surrogate. A manipulative one at that. He represents all of those fans who are still holding onto their nostalgia ...because they know that is a good portion of their viewership. As much as he is played for laughs, they also have him win the "capture the bandana" game and notice how they had the students cheer when he joined in on the fight at the end? That was them saying "they are cheering for you, middle aged man who is still trying holding onto their youth." It was weird that they shit on their fan base, but also thought they could get away with manipulative tactics to attempt to celebrate people they clearly think are basement dwellers.
At the end of the day, we all know he's just out of comic relief trope who represented the 80's fans but I guess for some it just throw them off the show, for me it didn't. He fit perfectly considering the ridiculousness of the adults in this universe. Besides, he was only in like 2-5% of the scenes of S2.
Thankfully, I did not see myself in Stingray at all lol Not even one bit. But yeah I see what you mean.
shareI did a similar thread I agree. For starters having an adult even a youngish one among the teens is creepy. He has a Jack Black kind of style about him as well which just makes it worse. I don't see the point of him, the show has enough funny moments as it is without an obvious clown type like him.
shareYeah it was really creepy..Like at the end when he beats up kids at school I was like WTF?! Really bad idea from the writers..
shareI really enjoy the non PC stuff in this show and even I thought that was going too far! Especially as he was also trying to get a security job in the school to hang with the Cobra Kai kids.
I liked when he turned up to the teen party with the woman and she was surprised to see all his friends were kids. An unnecessary character.
Absolutely terrible addition to the show. Forced comedy that just ain’t funny at all.

I agree about this. An adult should not be part of a teen group, it's just disturbing and weird, and not funny. I honestly was relieved when I thought we'd never see him after the store, but when I saw him in the doujou, I almost screamed out the window "Noooooooooooooooooooo!", because I realized he's somehow part of the gang now, aagh.
But it's still a brilliant show otherwise.
I enjoyed him for comic relief. One thing I noticed about season 1 was that it was Gen-X vs. Gen-Z. Gen-Y (millennials), one of the easiest generations to make fun of, was missing and Stingray filled the gap.
shareI can see why people would find him funny. But personally he was not my type of humor at all..
shareHe fits in perfectly! He's the classic man-boy who suffers from a permanent case of "Peter Pan syndrome".
shareI love Demetri, I would really love to be friends with him and give him all the support I possibly can. He's such a complainer and a nerd, we'd get alone famously.
However, that stingray guy .. the first few seconds of him on the screen grinded my stress-level almost to the maximum, and I had to say out loud, "what an UNPROFESSIONAL sales clerk!", and I was hoping we wouldn't see more of that disgusting blob.
It's RIDICULOUS that he can win that 'headband-battle' - there's no way he would be able to do that in real life, it's so so so unrealistic.
It's like some chars become instantly super powerful just by being in Cobra Kai doujou in a few seconds, sheesh.
He also does NOT fit in AT ALL. He's too old, he's too annoying, he's too stupid and he has too many weird quirks that are not entertaining. He's not 'classic' anything, I have NEVER seen anyone like that in real life, and I can't imagine such a thing could even exist in real life.
He has a job, so he's not very 'classic' 'Peter Pan Syndrome' guy. His motivations are also very unclear and unrealistic.
I am not all too crazy about the crazy fema-fascist-looking fat hag, either, but I'd rather remove this clown guy from the show than the hag, at least she has realistic moments sometimes (although she's still a mary sue - just count how many hits to the face she takes during the whole show and compare to any often-seen male character).
