What a dumbass..

He finds out who's driving the truck, and decides to walk in armed with a screwdriver, instead of alerting the cops or at the very least, running home quick to arm himself.

Not only that, but earlier in the movie, dude has RECORDED video of a guy hunting a girl in the woods. He decides his best course of action is to go out there alone.

Idiot.

He was too eager to take revenge on the killer. If he had alerted the police he wouldn't of course be able to do that.

Yea, I wondered about the video. His computer was also crashed when the guy attacked him but the sheriff was able to see it? (ok, maybe two monitors.) Still I thought it was an interesting story.

As Paperboy said, he wanted vengeance on the murderer of his daughter, which would've been hindered if the police were involved. Also, the sanctuary was his domain and he saw himself as the authority. Furthermore, the movie paints him as a radical do-it-yourself type; for instance, after getting speared he takes care of his serious wound himself instead of going to the nearest emergency ward.

Yes, I think he saw his chance for a pound of flesh but he certainly should have brought his shotgun.
He was crazy with grief I would say.
