As always, in almost any movie, the cops are absolute, complete idiots. A lot of the time they don't show up at all. And when they do, it's like all of them had lobotomies. Here, naturally, the cops have IQ's the same as their shoe size. I can't imagine how any police department would ever want to have anything to do with almost any production, since they know how they're going to be portrayed.
shareCops being idiots was deliberate. In the 70s people got away with countless crimes because the police didn't think a nice white man called Rupert could possibly be a killer, a handsome man couldn't possibly be a rapist, women were hysterical about everything, and children lied about being abused, molested,etc.
That's the whole point the film is making about this particular period.
This is true! I do agree. I heard second hand about all the abuse back then in the 70's, so I am not surprised. But, the Movie Cops thing is a trope in so many films. Classic films to today's films where the cops HAVE to be clueless to make the plot work.
