Manson's mom was a prostitute and he grew up in a whorehouse.

I doubt anyone was telling him he was special.

I wouldn't say he is typical. He clearly has some form of split personality as he talks to himself and says not to doubt himself.

There are 3 times in the movie where he shows doubt and then his persona suddenly changes. Likely this is caused by the LSD.
