Roseanne's scene with David was quite touching

Does anyone else love the relationship Roseanne and David have always shared? It's odd but in many ways she treats him better than her own children. She's always had a soft spot for him and I believe it has a lot to do with their shared childhood experiences.

She was abused as a child and took David in when she saw how he was abused, even stating: "I grew up in a house like that."

I think she's always looked upon David not only as a son but as someone in need of that affection he lacked in his household growing up. Even with the way she would tease him over the years in a similar manner to her own children she was always protective of him and receptive to his sensitive side.

It's weird--she really does seem to treat him better than her own children. She also seems the most attached to Mark (David and Darlene's son) and Mark is sensitive like David.

It's an interesting relationship for sure and I'm glad they decided to write in that Roseanne continued having a relationship with David through it all. Her scene where she tells David: "You won't have anyone left in this house to defend you" and then "You're a quality person--prove me right" you feel the maternal vibe there.

I have. I always felt they had a special bond. Years ago, when it was finally brought out in the open that David was living with Darlene in her room at school, Rosanne tried to smooth things over with Dan. She always did that when David screwed up, but she used tough love.

By the way, I like your posts. You helped me put things into perspective when it came to this last episode. I was having a little trouble with it because it is a sad situation. Thanks for helping me figure it all out.

Tough love is a good way to put it, yes.

No problem! I actually wasn't liking this whole "David ran out on his family" thing I kept hearing about for months but this episode conveyed it in a believable context that was within the scope of David's character. It was surprisingly believable and they way they just flat out say: "Look, David and Darlene are still fighting--what is the use after all these years?". It echoes what most of us thought about their relationship all those years ago: David and Darlene have a great deal of chemistry but their relationship is one lacking in respect. It just didn't work.

Perhaps Roseanne's book where the spouses were swapped really WOULD have worked out better as Mark would have stood up to Darlene and David/Becky would have been more compatible.
