The doctor is the actual villain of the movie. She is trying to control all three: Keeping Glass under her thumb, preventing Dunn from messing up her plans, and possibly trying to manipulate Split boy into doing her bidding.

If this turns out to be true, then it wouldn’t be much of a “twist”. But as with most M. Night films, I expect Glass to deliver the unexpected. Hopefully it’ll be for the best.
Well there has to be more to it, like her having a superpower as well... For example, based on her being a psychologist, it would make sense that she can read other's thoughts. It wouldn't necessarily be your basic classic mind-reading, but maybe something more specific, like "hearing" the thoughts someone is thinking at the moment, as if they were in their mind, but without being able to see their memories or anything.
The other side to this is that it's possible she can also incept the same thing into their mind, that she can cause "voices" in a person's head. Basically a spooky version of imposed telepathy, and it would drive someone mad if she did it right... But since it's nowhere near mind control, it could be defeated.
She'd end up being sort of a Nurse Ratched version of Professor X. Since David Dunn has basic powers done in a more specific and limited and dramatic way, that's where I was going with hers.
This way, she would know that these people know they have powers, and might also be trying to figure out what it would take to make them believe what she's telling them, that their powers are just delusional beliefs.
This is actually an altered version of a "possible supervillain" I am doing for a story I may never write, where people with powers are identified and induced by a government agency to check out an insanely popular politician who they have identified as having a power of mental influence, making people like him and agree with him.
They literally found a way to detect his influence field from a satellite , and only recognized that he was the center of it based on the fact that its movement matched his perfectly (it took time since he has others around him all the time).
The thing is, the government agency doesn't know if he is doing this mental influence purposefully, and for a good or evil purpose, or if he doesn't realize he can do it, like a muscle he's never learned to control.
Deeply fascinating stuff. If this is who her character turns out to be, then I’m all for it. But superpowers or not, it won’t be any surprise if/when it’s revealed that her motivations in the film are anything but good. The opposite could be true tho.
Intriguing story you have going on there, by the way. Sounds good.
After seeing this, I am without question expecting something hugely unexpected (here’s hoping)...

shareTerrible role. Basically just stalled the movie for an hour with that storyline that wound up being pointless. Would have much rather had 30mins of catching up with David Dunn in the real world.
sharenot terrible at all for my taste. and pointless? hell no. remember she told elija that there are hundereds of cameras and then she realized he used it against her to stream it to the net. so pointless it wasent. it was part of the lure of the movie to raise questions about super powers within the boundries of the real world. like elija said. just because it can be explained by science dosent contradict that its a super power

sharebut they arnt super heros like in the comic books. this was the whole point. she dident deny it she explain scientifically everything they did. sure she was exposed in the end but it still gave the movie more layers of thinking. besides her and her man killed all of them because of it. if she wasent part of any organization then they wouldent have a reason to kill david dun and elija. kevin was doomed from the start so this is another thing. but this movie was not about action it was about philosophy of the human race. there is no stalling and no dragging if you accept the fact that this is the kind of movie that is. if you expected a real like marvel movie of david dun vs the beast then you expected the wrong movie.
shareI'm not a Marvel fan so I wasn't expecting that. I love Unbreakable and like Split, which are both slow but do a great job of building tension.
She just stated the obvious about their conditions - which is fine for a few scenes to establish the point of her character.
I especially found the group therapy session painful to sit through. It just went nowhere.
I found the whole movie slow, but still worthwhile. The group session was a microcosm of that whole. Yeah, it dragged, but it was necessary to plant doubt in David's and Kevin's minds.
In doing so, that scene sets up Elijah as the hero, who not only confirms their hero/villain status, but exposes them to the world in spite of Dr. Staple's "evil plan."
Remember, Staple's not trying to convince US, the audience, that their powers are fake. How can she? She herself believes in them.
I think Shyamalan stretches the scene out to make it credible that Kevin and David might begin to doubt themselves, and by extension Elijah as well.
That only heightens the impact when we learn that Elijah never lost his faith and absolutely was a legitimate supervillain mastermind in the end.

My prediction, much smaller and much more incorrect, was that she would be the associate that Dr. Fletcher told Kevin would take over for her in the event of her death.
