Mixed reviews
I’m surprised the movie is getting mixed reviews... I thought the sjw reviewers would have loved the fact its got a black protagonist in a big budget summer blockbuster... a first for a Nolan film

shareI wasn't expecting Woke critics to be excessively pleased.
I'll explain myself: perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think Nolan has gone Woke. I think he used that actor because he liked him, not because of some diversity quota. Again, maybe, maybe I'm wrong.
In general Wokes have some kind of sixth sense that detects other Wokes. If they don't sense that Nolan has gone Woke, they won't promote the movie, no matter the black lead. Wokeness is like a religion, and religious people pay a lot of attention to other people being or not part of their cult. Perhaps you don't drink alcohol or eat pork: that is not gonna make Muslims promote you, you need to go Muslim too. The same happens with Wokes.
bell hooks would probably tear this to shreds for perpetuating the stereotypical portrayal of black males involved in macho violence.
shareMixed? You mean just a lot of reviews saying it’s ok/descent?
83% on rottentomatoes seems mostly good to me.
From the reviews I have read is that some were disappointed mostly due to the complexity which minimized the entertainment value of the film.
shareThat should be a matter of opinion. I enjoy complex movies, not everyone does. A reviewer that is feeling "disappointed" because the movie wasn't his cup of tea, that's a bad reviewer.
shareI enjoy complex films, however, many are expecting more entertainment than complexity, and some are expecting no complexity at all. Since that is a matter of opinion as you stated, than "a bad reviewer" is a matter of subjectivity.
shareSome where complaining about jarring plot holes or puzzles that lead to nowhere. Maybe there is too much jargon for people to closely follow on. Overall the positivity is still above 70%. Still seeing it on Thursday though.
shareI’ve just seen the film here in the UK.
I was very disappointed and I would say I’m a bit of a Nolan fanboy.
This should have been a winner. A Mission: Impossible action thriller exploring the complex nature of time travel? Sounds great!
Ultimately though the movie is never that intriguing, exciting or thrilling. The first half is weak and doesn’t do enough to intrigue you for the second half which is where Nolan movies snowball into the thrills that take you to the end of the movie (Inception, The Dark Knight and Interstellar being the best example of this.)
I was bored in the second half, the action isn’t as well directed as say Mission: Impossible Fallout, Casino Royale or Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It’s very bland action, like on par with Spectre, competent enough but never spectacular.
The sound mixing is also terrible and it’s almost like Nolan is trolling by cranking up the music and the background noise to drown out his dialogue.
I understood the movie just fine, but I’m honestly amazed Nolan gets these great actors to deliver his smart dialogue and then just drowns it all out.
The real problem is the third act though, by that point the movie has shown you everything it can with watching something inversed that you’re just kind of like ‘what else you got’ and when the movie has very little character development and zero emotional depth it just adds up to a meh movie. I just thought ‘Is that it?’ as the credits rolled.
With another rewrite of the script Nolan could have had something special here, but the film is also let down by the fact he’s just not the best action director out there now. A freeway car chase should be thrilling like the one in The Matrix Reloaded, the chase in Tenet is just dull even with the inverted gimmick.
