My favorite (unspoken) element was the implication that...


... this family has managed to survive so long (and it seems that very few people have) precisely because they have a deaf daughter. They would be used to communicating in sign language and conveying important information with minimalism and patience.
Of course it helps that the father is handy, technically proficient and has outdoor skills; but sign language probably gave them quite the edge.

I agree... It was very well done...

I liked the irony that her flaw is what compelled them to adapt to sign language and allowed them to survive... Kinda beautiful to see what we think of us flaws might lead to our strength... It's a nice touch as a comment on the importance of empathy... Here it is dramatised as key to our survival...
