What did Charles do wrong?

In this movie, Charles is depicted as a sort of manipulator and someone who took advantage of Jean, even if it was her father who had rejected her and didn't want anything to do with her. So what's Charles' fault? He protected Jean from her unstable powers and fulfilled the wishes of her father. Had it not been for him, Jean would have lethally harmed herself and other people. Why did he have to admit that he did something wrong like in the scene with Beast? And speaking about Beast, he was the one who was driven by vengeance and wanted to kill Jean, not Charles. Charles wanted to save Jean. So is he the villain in this movie or Beast? Not to mention that feminazi shit that Mystique was putting on at the beginning of the story.
