Dark Phoenix highlights a problem with X-Men: The Last Stand

The X-Men never get to fight Phoenix.

The only confrontation they have with her is Xavier getting obliterated and Jean letting Logan stab her to death with little resistance. What makes it worse is how X2 builds up Jean just to have the following film do little to nothing with her.

It’s like Infinity War having Thanos never fight the Avengers or the Guardians instead just have him snap half the universe away. Then in Endgame he lets himself get defeated without much resistance after teasing at him so much.

In order to do The Dark Phoenix Saga you have to first do The Phoenix Saga. The Dark Phoenix Saga is a story about corruption and temptation. In order for it to properly resonant, it needs to start at a place of purity and benevolence. The Phoenix has to be the savior of the universe, before she becomes a menace to all life.

If we want to get specific, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Dark Phoenix were both written by Simon Kinberg. And, well, he didn't grow or change between movies. As much as he has claimed his vision in X-Men: The Last Stand was compromised, it actually wasn’t. If anything, X-Men: Dark Phoenix feels like a rough draft of X-Men: The Last Stand. On every level the exact problems in the original are still there in the new movie. And it boils down to the fact that Kinberg doesn’t understand The Dark Phoenix Saga, nor does he understand why it was good.

But everyone makes the same mistake when revisiting them, or adapting them. They want to skip directly to The Dark Phoenix Saga and ignore all the important things that have to be set up so The Dark Phoenix Saga even works.
