Why did the Terminator kill John Connor?

The end of the world was supposed to happen in 1997, the Terminator (Schwarzenegger) killed young John Connor in 1998. Future Connor had already stopped the end of the world so there was no need to kill him at that point, so why did the Terminator kill him? Makes no sense.

yeah but in T3 him and the girl start the resistance in the bunker. just later on. it was supposed to be about John meeting the father or something to stop Skynet..
