a curious lack of memorabilia

as a big Terminator fan ive always purchased stuff for each film (books, magazines, comics - not so much figures/toys/games) - this began way back with T2 (Making Of book, Script/Photo book, Starlog official T2 magazine, Marvel comic adaptation, novels of T2 and T1, I even got some T2 bubble gum cards)..then T3 had a couple of magazines, novel, some prequel comics etc. T4 had a bunch of stuff I never bothered to buy other than the official magazine (think there were 2 'coffee table' books, novel, prequel novel, comic, prequel comics etc plus a load of toys) and while TG initially seemed abit light on stuff there was a big 'coffee table' making of book (that I waited a while and picked up for like a quarter the price in a bargain book store) plus there was also a strange looking board game and the usual various Hot Toys figures (which are like thousands of dollars) but there was no official film magazine, comic adaptation or prequel comics or even the novel that T2/3/4 got - granted the marketplace had changed with ppl not so bothered about buying books and magazines when all the information is on their phone/tablet/laptop..(hell the wiki entry for each movie bests anything written in any expensive making of book or official magazine and you want photos simply google images and theres all youd ever need - and as for the novel and comic adaptation well the movie is available to buy/download the second its left theatres and that was the selling point for te novel/comic as back in the 70s/80s/90s the film could take a good while to be available to buy or show on tv .. so alot of genre films just do prequel comics and novels these days.. I guess they figure an adaptation of the actual movie is pretty much pointless now)

which leads to Dark Fate...

I can find absolutely sweet FUCK ALL..

seriously go on amazon type in T:DF and theres NOTHING - no books, no magazines. no comics. just the score mp3 (not even cd - and you can get any score for any film on utube now anyway) and a listing for the eventual dvd/blu (for comparison sake just 2 years ago there seemed to be a plethora of Alien Covenant and Blade Runner 2049 stuff - big coffee table books, magazines, prequel novels etc .. I bought the Covenant magazine and novel and am still waiting to get the big Art of BR2049 when I can get it cheap)

so the only thing ive got on DF is a Den of Geek magazine that I got from ebay that was handed out at the SD comic con a while back and has a nice cover with a 4page article inside (initially I figured itd be the entire magazine dedicated to DF like similar to the official magazines for T234 but nope)...

another thing - Empire magazine which ive been buying every month since the mid 90s didn't bother to do a T:DF cover issue or have any lengthy article in the mag (other than a brief 2page 'coming soon' piece a while back) yet for each Terminator film before they've done a cover and a big 8-10 page article on the making of the film (even for Genisys) - this time ..NOTHING (which is strange as this Terminator film deals with all the SJW stuff that Empire are have a big hard on for) Total Film the lesser magazine in UK did do a cover though but I stopped buying that years ago as its virtually the same as Empire (I remember the TF issue for TG had free teaser poster for TG which I stuck an 'R' rating logo on to make me feel better about it being PG13 in the run up to release! yes that was/is how sad I am ..lol...well I got my wish with DF as it was R rated lol)

No collector freaks in here huh

I think you hit it on the head that the marketplace has changed...print is expensive, and R rated movies cannot be marketed as well, so that means no 'action figures'.

Also the series is kind of played out, although I enjoyed this movie, it is not fresh like 'The Joker'.

I bet you can find a boatload of Joker stuff out there.

theres those silly 'Funko' figures and I remember seeing some Dark Fate 'hot toys' on some website a few days ago. yknow those ultra realistic action figures that be about 100 bucks a piece for the real die hard fans (they do them for all kinds of SF films from popular Avengers to less popular films as they know theres a market for even stuff like Genisys and Dark Fate). I think they also did them for the previous films way back to T3..(and I remember T4 also had some kiddie toys in the stores that no one bought - I think T2 had kids toys as well even though it was an R movie. I guess they will have obviously sold as everyone loved T2 ) I actually bought an early 'hot toys' type figure of T2s T800 back in around 2000, it was part of a "Movie Maniacs" collection that were possibly the first of the 'realistic action figures' (also included all the horror icons Freddy Jason Michael etc as well as Snake Plissken etc)

Joker im sure will have a shit load of stuff - making of/Art books etc - if not when the movie was released then they'll quickly churn them out as the film has become as big as Batman89 and TDK

That's what I thought too. Rate R, you won't find much in the likes of walmart/Target.

reply

I think that's likely more related with the death of the American comic. The whole business is in decline.

reply

I didn't know that but it makes sense

I miss the good old days when R-rated action movies WERE the blockbusters. Terminator and Robocop merchandise, Rambo, etc. Those were the days.

My family never owned Terminator 2 on home video so we just recorded it on the VCR and that's how I enjoyed that movie for my entire childhood: on an old recordable VHS tape. I actually remember a Robocop toy that generated little sparks to simulate the "gun" firing.

Those were the good old days where we had ACTUAL strong female characters like Ellen Ripley--the days when a female character could still be strong without being a male-hating political statement.

Movies were more fun back then. The world made more sense then.

That's my view of it, anyway.

I too long for those days past ..

Idk what the hell is going on most of the time in this crazy new world

"Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?"
- Joker (2019)

reply

lol I didn't realise but I basically said the same

saves you money on this turd

is there joker 2019 memorabilia available ?

reply

lol I would've bought some DF stuff had it been there - the magazine, comics, novel, making of hard back.. (waiting until cheap from eBay)

With joker actually I looked on amazon and don't think theres much in the way of books etc (just joker graphic novels not associated with the film)but you can bet that will change very soon as whenever a movie becomes a phenomenon it spawns everything you can think I bet even in this day and age of screens .. and if its a low key movie like Joker was supposed to be then they quickly get on it (remember Star Wars 'early bird' figures)

reply

joker figurine/toys with joaquin face available?

reply

Bound to be, if not available now then very soon (joker just about to break TDK this wkend)

reply

Actually can't seem to find anything at all on joker. It being low budget R movie must've made it so they didn't bother with doing merchandise books, toys , figures (surely they got to make those hot toys for the die hard fans). Or maybe todays generation don't give a shit about all that tat now when they got anything they need on their screens
